What shoots well on the deck?

DOOM Eternal is playable even with raytracing on the Deck.

Some more recommendations which run well:

  • Titanfall 2
  • Wolfenstein New Order
  • Terminator Resistance

These should also run without any issue:

  • Prey
  • Deathloop
  • Dying Light
  • Halo Masterchief Collection
  • Alien: Isolation (not really a shooter)
  • System Shock Remake

Just to name a few.

Titanfall 2 is straight up perfect on the Deck, from visuals to performance to controls.

But the game is sooo short, I could go for 5x the time the campaign lasted πŸ˜₯

Play harder difficulties?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

id Software are just optimization wizards. DOOM Eternal works like a charm in almost all modern hardware.

Nah there's no wizardry here. The game itself is actually very simple in terms of processing. You only see maybe a dozen enemies at once, if that, ever, and whenever you do its in a locked arena area. A tiny arena even.

As FPS games go, Doom is wildly simplistic, which makes it that much more impressive that it's as fun and repayable as it is. I personally thought the narrative actually managed to carry a lot of that weight (i loved the story) but it was also the gameplay itself - they did a superb job making the player actually learn the guns and why you'd use each one, rather than just letting them have a favorite.

Don't get me wrong though, I don't mean to belittle them. Doom is a chefs egg. Every cook can make an egg, but making a perfect egg every time is something that takes the mastery of a chef. Id is very much the chef in the analogy.

Deep Rock Galactic runs great and is a lot of fun. It is a bit of a battery hog though, so best plugged in or in short bursts.

Boltgun runs fantastic and is a great boomer shooter. The cutscenes don't work without a workaround, but there's 4 total and none of them are important anyway.

Doom Eternal runs beautifully, and is super action-packed and fun. Surprisingly good on the battery too for such nice graphics.

I found DRG to be fine on battery until you hit like 20%, then things get wild

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Lol nothing like 3% battery warning as you scramble towards the drop pod to really put the fear of Karl in you!

For real though a 25 minute mission easily eats 40%+ of the battery, no idea why it's so energy intensive. Mind you I've done zero tinkering, just playing it out of the box, I'm sure you could juice some more life out of it if you tried

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Haha, I've lost all relevant when racing to the drop pod on battery, that makes things pretty challenging.

What’s an ego-shooter?

[–] wavebeam 1 points 1 year ago

nevermind, I realized it's a different term for FPS. Usually from a country where english isn't the primary language. neat! I like the name more than FPS actually.

Anyway, I'd recommend Titanfall 2, Bioshock, of even Halo: Master Chief Collection

A frisbee launcher modified to accept frozen Eggo pucks

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

It doesn't geht mentioned often, but I really enjoyed Call of Juarez: Gunslinger

Ego shooters

Found the German

Warhammer 40k Boltgun is super fun, though some people think it gets boring after the first few missions.

There's also Turbo Overkill, which definitely scratches that itch.

There's also Ultrakill, but I personally wasn't too into that as someone who sometimes just wants to shoot shit on his deck. (it felt a bit too puzzly for my tastes, not a bad game just not what I was looking for)

Edit: Boltgun required some media file conversions to prevent cutscenes from breaking on the deck. If you end up getting it, let me know and I'll link to the steam community post that outlines the fixes you'll need to make. Otherwise, though, a great game.

Steamdeck is really perfect for Boomer Shooters isn't it? Have you tried Warstride?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

The touchpads are the best way to play once you get used to them and gyro aiming. That's the beauty of the Deck, it has many input options.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Link please? Thinking about picking it up

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Here's how to fix the cutscenes.

...and here's how to improve performance on the deck!

Prodeus is awesome. Check out Project Warlock 1 and 2 as well.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I’ve heard a lot of good things about Prodeus as a Boomer Shooter and it looks to run well on Steam Deck. Think I’m going to download it tonight myself honestly!

What's an "ego-shooter"? I know boomer shooter.

Anyway just found out about Battlebit. While thr graphical quality is like Roblox, it has a super high refresh rate, massive amounts of players, incredible customization. I'm very impressed from what I've seen and I've heard folks raving about it.

[–] GlitchyDigiBun 2 points 1 year ago

But god I can't hit shit with the joysticks/gyro :c

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

It's just the term used in some countries like Germany for FPS.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Ego = the self from its own perspective. Makes complete sense actually. But do they call third person games "superego games"?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

GOt you. Thank you.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

TF2, unironically. Gyro + Snap controls are super solid on TF2, particularly because of the reduced emphasis on long-range hitscan weapons.

Here's a really solid video about it: https://youtu.be/PJIqEX93vL8

The only downside IMO is the iffy Wi-Fi performance on the Steam Deck.

I've really been enjoying using Plutonium to play Black Ops 1&2 multiplayer. Its a bit of a process to set it up, but worth it in the end.
