Somehow I never though that slag floats on molten metal and it's enough to puncture the bottom to get clean metal. We are used to believe that people in the past were stupid and uncultured, but it's obvious they were equally intelligent and smart.

We are the same humans, just with different tools and cultural backgrounds. Personally i love to imagine early eocene humans going about their day and coming up with clever solutions for all kinds of tasks.

I can't speak as to the specifics of the picture, but in a blast furnace, you put in the materials in at the top of the furnace (as you can see a worker bringing coal or ore up to the top), and blow hot air in at the bottom. The waste gas goes up, and the molten metal sinks down where it can be collected.
