I've often seen this sort of thing in videos advertising GI in minecraft shaders, and tried it out in blender.

My question is how much does that affect the performance of the viewport in render mode? I hope it isn't taxing!

It's a simple scene so it's not slow but it does take a while to converge, you can see even in the render there's noise on the edge of the torus and the edges of the floor

No, cycles. I have one in regular eevee, with a bunch of light probes:

there's a lot of aliasing on the far wall, from the light probes. there might be some way to get rid of it, but idk
