Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

What's with all the non-empathetic comments here? 1,300 deaths is a horrible tragedy 😞

Yep. I hate how Lemmings just go "religion bad" and pretend like these people deserve it for having different beliefs. And I'm pretty sure that global warming has also played a part in this.

While it is a horrible tragedy. It is a preventable one.

And given the sheer amount of pilgrims (2,5 million by some estimates), it could have been a lot worse. Given that size some will die by sheer statistical probability.

What percentage is that? Compared to the number of worked that died building their stadiums for the world cup, it's nothing (to them).

Did you know that Muslims are invidual human beings and not just a part of a monolith?

What prompted this comment?

I can't see the numbers in future getting any better, unless big changes are made. Many pilgrims are quite old, since some need many years to save up enough for the journey, and of course the temperature's only going to be going up (even after La NiΓ±a).

It's part of the rituals to get the timing exactly right, so it's not like it can be moved to cooler months, like has been proposed for the Summer Olympics. It is moving earlier by a week and a half each year (because of the Islamic calendar) but when you're talking 51.8C that's not really moving the needle.

I'd heard talk of health-monitoring bracelets, which seems sensible.

I have a big idea here. Just dont go there... If you wanna die for your religious beliefs, then have fun i guess.

I fully support their religious rights to explore their afterlife provided it's a solo experience.

Dying in Mecca is also an honour, so I wouldn't be surprise is a lot of these deaths are because of pre-existing conditions, worsened by the heat.

Stop whining, keep pumping that oil and living that excessive lifestyle b***s!

Y'all are too used to self-censorship, even on Lemmy. It's kind of sad how corporate online spaces have conditioned us...

Also I can't figure out what "b***s" is a stand-in for? ...butts?

[–] vikingtons 3 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Maybe a pair of asterisks got eaten by markdown formatting, though they don't look embolded or italicised. I'll also choose to believe it's "excessive lifestyle, butts".

You do realize that you can curse on the internet?

Its not mid nineties MTV.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I think it would come up removed on Lemmy.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 days ago

I'll take one for the team and fucking put that shit to the motherfucking test. Pretty sure we can bitch and moan all we want, as long as we aren't attacking some other user's ass.

I think you mean it might end up removed on this instance, though Lemmy itself doesn't have some kind of global automod built in, controlled by some central censorship team at the top. It's just regular mods following up on reports, generally. Maybe bigger instances have automods, but that would only affect those instances' users and the communities that live upon them.

Yeah but it’s an insult to lady dogs. I don’t give a fucking toss about those goddamn oil pumping tweezer-tosser arseholes, if that’s what you were looking for?
