Light Phone 3 (www.thelightphone.com)
submitted 2 weeks ago by citrusface to c/minimalism

So, I preordered the Light Phone 3? I considered the 2 for a while but it is just to clunky with its eink screen, texting would be a nightmare.

What are y'all's thoughts on the new design? Do you think minimalist phones are worth it?

Love to see it, I want more phones like this, idk I almost want a Light Phone with a microSD card slot for music/documents/files.

I know that goes against the whole super simple, less is more theme. However. I like options & I think every single phone should have expandable memory. Even Apple. When that feature isn't present in a smartphone, that is the company ripping you off.

The ability to take pictures & store them on a microSD card. Back up your phone, files & settings. Anything you want...and that phone can consequently fail or be destroyed, but you extract that card & you've got what you need? That feature is cheap to implement, that security is priceless. And that is what companies have stolen from all of us.

...anyway. Other than that, the 3 looks great. Love the small form factor & everything about it. I'm almost willing to buy it, anyway. I'm sad they don't have microSD, I am disappointed but I'm not surprised.

Why not a Punkt for less money? Or a Nokia for a lot less money.

I really don't get these things. They say nothing about security, privacy, or updates on their site.

You want basic functionality for cheap, that's the updated Nokia from 20 years ago. You want a decent modern phone with security, privacy, updates, and black and white icons? Get a Pixel, put GrapheneOS on it and download Articons.

This thing is a mashup of a candy bar phone and a 15 year old iPod, but unlike those things you can't actually buy one, you need to prefund the company and wait another 7 months.

I won't lie, I'm a sucker for how it looks.

The punkt does not meet my functionality standards. I do not want to go back to a brick. It does not have a camera nor a screen large enough for me to see for nav. I will admit it looks dope as hell, but it's not for me.

I do like the Punkt Smart phone, but it's a full ass smartphone and I want a minimalist phone because I have a screen addiction.

I have thought about Graphene, but the issue is - if I can make my device waste my time. I will make my device waste my time. My solution would be to get a device that does the things I need it to do without giving me the ability to do more in a form factor that I like.

400$ is not too much for me to pay that. The punkt is 300. Why is 400$ a bridge to far for this form factor?

I also love the swappable battery and that they are trying to make the phone easier to repair. It can be a hotspot and that is very useful.

Regarding privacy, this is a blog post about light OS on the LP2 https://medium.com/sanctuary-computer-inc/building-lightos-with-react-native-4b6e4ad1cd7f

If that's what you want go for it. Screen addiction is definitely a thing.

Swappable battery is nice, though you might not need it. Battery is small but the chip and screen aren't really doing a lot of heavy lifting.

Reparability is still TBC

That link doesn't seem to talk about privacy, it does say it is based on Android 8.1 though.

There are some things I don't understand about this phone. Why does it need 6 GB of ram? Why a modern chip set? Albeit low end. It seems odd. I have an iPhone 5s that I use everyday for reading online, checking the weather, etc. 1 GB and an 11 year old chip work fine, and it has more functions than this phone. Maybe it is because of 5g and NFC?

Anyway, give us an update when you get it.

Don't know yet - there's a lot they haven't fully released. So I'll keep watching it - if I change my mind, I'll get money back :)

I can't speak for everyone, but the lightphone can be a wifi hotspot. That's a feature that makes it more attractive to me. I would get a minimalist phone to avoid carrying distractions around with me, but I would still want to be able to get online via a tablet or laptop.

Edit: I hadn't looked at the punkt phones, but they also can be a wifi hotspot.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago

It's more to carry but you could get a Nokia and a hotspot device for way less if that was what you needed. And again you could buy those things now, they exist.

I did this until recently, monochrome Nokia and a hotspot for when I needed connectivity for my work laptop. I changed when I needed to do site surveys more frequently, a tablet with a Sim made much more sense.

Can't use it until it supports Signal, so that's a no from me, dog.

[–] citrusface 2 points 2 weeks ago

Would be nice, it's a possibility in the future they stated.

$400 ?! Way, what, no, base price $800 ?!?! Interesting niche product, but come on...

[–] citrusface 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

800 is a hard pill to swallow. They said that price will likely come down. I don't feel like 400 is too much for a phone.

[–] synapse1278 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

$400 is too much for a Light Phone. The whole purpose of is to be minimalistic...

[–] citrusface 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm cool with that price considering the thoughtful design and projected longevity of the phone. I'm not trying to convince you buy this. It is niche and meets what I am looking for and the price is fair to me.

It's an interesting product. I would be interested to read your comments about it in the future.

I was interested in the lightphone ii because of its small size and eink display. Now its just a big phone with a normal screen like every other.

At this point they might as well just release their os rom so you can get the lightphone expierence without having to buy new hardware.

[–] citrusface 2 points 2 weeks ago

It's the size of two credit cards it's still pretty small.
