Also on an unrelated note anyway to remove live from your subscribed channels update field ? Some channels are filling it with live so i have to really scroll down to see my video feeds and can't find a setting to switch it off. Newpipe didn't used to add live in your what's new feed of subscribed channels, related pic .

New Pipe having a hiatus and Youtube attacking Invidious and Piped has me like this.

Dope icon pack! Where did you get it?

Arcticons
You can look them up in F-Droid, they have 3-4 versions, dark, light, material you and one that changes depending on the time of the day(dark/light).
PS: it does not work on any Launcher, it has instructions for compatible launchers(20+?) within the app.

Settings>Content>Feed>Fetch channel tabs

Thanks that worked .

I recommend using Newpipe's own fdroid repo. You'll get the updates much faster there when something breaks

Better yet, use Obtainium to "get Android app updates directly from the source. Obtainium allows you to install and update apps directly from their releases pages, and receive notifications when new releases are made available."

This is the way.

Yay, newpipe is one of my favoutite apps

[–] [email protected] 7 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Personally I use LibreTube as it has a really beautiful ui and without VPNs proxies the connections trough piped servers

[–] [email protected] 12 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Is it stable now? I've used it for a while last year, and the experience wasn't exactly pleasant. On the good side, they had lots of useful features like properly rendering comments with replies and stuff, sponsorblock and channel tabs, but it used to crash a lot for any reason. May try it out again, although newpipe (or, more precisely, tubular, which is yet another attempt at sponsorblock which is still alive) kinda has everything I personally need currently.

Libretube would have replaced the youtube app for me if not for how slow their instances are for me. So far I did not see any crashes but the pages would sometimes not load and would require you to change instances. I think the cause may have been that the instances are hosted far away from me geographically and that my current internet connection has been having issues for non-mainstream websites.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 months ago

I used to select piped instances via libretube (mobile Firefox lets you install non-approved extensions by making your own collection and choosing that in the browser). Basically I'd go to the extension's settings page, ping the available instances and choose some of the fastest ones. Although, it's not at all convenient.

The proxy is unstable. I just disable the piped proxy and it works perfectly.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 months ago

But in this case I suggest you to use vpn

Have yout tried with "Use HLS"? It's a known issue and will be fixed ASAP

[–] thequantumcog 1 points 6 months ago

Even before the HLS bug, libretube was finky, I think newpipe also doesn't use proxy so I'm fine with it.

I'm not an Android user, but I'm happy for my Android brethren.

They've been playing cat and mouse with google for a while now where google keep breaking youtube access from newpipe.

[–] devfuuu 5 points 6 months ago

Just glad that the comments not loading is now fixed.

Just got a 2nd hand Pixel I am currently tinkering with/thinking about Degoogling. Is there a significant difference between Newpipe vs Revanced?

[–] [email protected] 17 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)
  • Newpipe doesn't let you leave comments (which was the reason I personally switched to it -- I used to spend too much time commenting like half of the stuff I watched, and I watched a lot) or login with a Google account;
  • newpipe doesn't have sponsorblock (which is currently solved by using tubular; note that it may or may not become abandoned like previous attempts by other ppl);
  • newpipe lets you download video/audio (although, admittedly, having yt-dlp in termux is still more than handy for bulk downloads);
  • newpipe has better (imo) background playback: you can either play or enqueue both videos and playlists (note: I haven't used yt app for a while, so mb it also can do similar stuff)
  • newpipe doesn't need play services whatsoever;
  • newpipe's ui takes some time to get used to (imo)
[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 months ago

Thank you for this thorough breakdown!

[–] [email protected] 17 points 6 months ago

I don't think revanced is even a bit privacy friendly, it's just a mod of youtube

[–] [email protected] 7 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

If you want to actually fully degoogle, you wouldn't want to use Revanced. Revanced just patches the official YouTube App.

I personally use NewPipe when watching on my phone, but I do have Revanced YouTube installed as well just for casting to my TV. Convenience for me.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago

@sigmaklimgrindset well, for one, it is a completely separate app

No seriously, where ReVanced is a collection of patches for the official YouTube app(s) (and some others)

NewPipe is a built-from-the-ground, independent, no-Google-Code YouTube client that relies entirely on scraping the website using NewPipeExtractor

As such, the entire experience apart from the content itself differs.
