So i saw several ads for the German AfD Party (Neo-fascists). I will gladly pay to remove ads but knowing that these ads would still be shown to others here i would rather not support this app in case this continues. Anything that could be done about it?

There should be a report button to report it. Last time this happened the ad got taken down before the dev could report it on his end.

The ads come from ad networks, so there ain't much visibility into what gets displayed: it's regional and stuff.

Boost is not controlling what ads it shows you. Google does.

They're currently running a big campaign on Google Ads. Maybe try to raise a stink with Google about them allowing political advertising, especially for parties which have been judicially confirmed to be partially right-wing extremists.

i'm actually surprised that politics isn't one of the sensitive ad topics that you can switch off in google ads settings.

probably because political parties are willing to pay an unsavory amount of money for these ads

Lemmy is clearly not the right platform they should target ๐Ÿ˜‚

Let them waste their money over here, the more the better.

I would recommend using an ad free lemmy app. This is not the right platform for making money, especially through ads.

Why not? This isn't some big Corp running the app. I'm ok if he gets a little bit of money.

Agreed. Development isn't always easy, and devs shouldn't be treated as free labor. If you want "free," use the web app for your instance (to whom you should donate to keep it running, because servers aren't free).

You can buy it once (I think it's like $5) to remove ads. I've been using the Reddit version since about when it came out. I've gotten a lot of use from it over the years, and I'm happy to have the same experience on Lemmy.

The guy deserves his $5 and the donations. Sure it's not for everyone, some people would rather not run proprietary apps, but sometimes it's worth paying for software. The key for me is, it's not forced on me: I chose that app. It competes on its own merits.

Maybe one day Jerboa will beat it, but in the meantime I appreciate the quick API backend swap and having a high quality Lemmy app in like about a month into the Reddit API apocalypse.
