This is repeated a few times in the story. It made me think about two things:

They are producing endless amounts of CO2. Here, on this planet.

He is trying to secure the profit of that space cargo company.
He doesn't give a 💩 about this planet. He/we will fuck it up and then (in his unstable mind) we leave, with planet fucked up beyond belief for any other animals.
