I'd be smiling too if I got any house in this market.

For real. I saw a house that was for sale in pretty great condition. My mom said someone had recently died in it. And? I will willingly scare away ghosts for a decent house.

Every house that's more than a few decades old has had people die inside it. The US is young enough that it seems rare (though probably isn't), but in any country that's been lived in for many hundreds of years all their old houses have had multiple people die in them.

"We've redecorated this house to how it looked over 50 years ago."

"No one was alive then!"

But, surely old houses can't be more than fifteen years old?

The kid's smile got me laughing really good. It's like "hee hee, hope I don't get ghost-murdered!"

In Japan there's a list of houses called "Jiko Bukken", which is mostly properties where there has been a unnatural death.
Japanese law obligates the real estate company to tell upfront if that's the case, hence why such list exists.

In most cases, these places are incredibly cheap, as in 1/4 of the price.

That said, it is technically a poor investment instrument and it will probably be hard getting a loan because of it.

If you're curious, here's a site for it: https://www.oshimaland.co.jp/
