We've installed Voyager and it's reachable at https://m.lemmy.world, you can browse Lemmy, and login there (also if your account isn't on lemmy.world)

Is there a benefit to using the Voyager hosted on the Lemmy server vs direct from vger.app? Any downsides

[–] basskitten 12 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Benefit: My password autofill works because the domain is lemmy.world instead of voyager.app.

[–] WhoRoger 7 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It's not just autofill. If it's a different domain, the proxy host is reading your password and sending it though to Lemmy to log you in.

This won’t be the case as soon as Lemmy.world fixes their CORS policy.

If you happen to be using 1Password, you can search and do a one time fill.

[–] basskitten 2 points 2 years ago

Oh I can still do it with iCloud passwords, it’s just not as convenient.

Based on a comment by @[email protected] it looks like they're just using a docker container, only takes seconds to update. He said he'd probably set up Watchtower which auto updates containers so it should be only an hour or so behind.

Downside from what I understand would be potentially delayed updates depending on how they pull the codebase

When you're using vger hosted on a different domain, your password has to be read by them and sent to the Lemmy server to log you in.

If it's on the same server, the pw stays in the one system (albeit it might still need to go through the two pieces of software, idk how it's configured).

Fantastic. Hopefully this becomes the default and helps to keep your server costs manageable.

Also most popular servers are no longer proxied (or else soon), so that should help a lot I think.

I was wondering when other admins would start doing this! I've had mine up at app.thelemmy.club for a week or two.

Im a big Trek fan and don’t hate the name, but I found wefwef much more unique and memorable.

What is the reason you switched off that name?

[–] G0FuckThyself 9 points 2 years ago (4 children)

What is the difference between wefwef and m.lemmy.world?

[–] Fingerthief 27 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

I assume the idea is to give people an easy and nice looking default mobile experience for lemmy users without users having to go find things like wefwef/voyager themselves.

[–] G0FuckThyself 3 points 2 years ago

That's nice.

Wefwef is an an web app, like an app, but that runs powered by your phone's web browser, usually accessible through a URL and you can then install it.

m.lemmy.world is just a page, hosted by lemmy.world. Typically, it should have just had a mobile view of the usual lemmy frontend. But what this announcement is saying is that Wefwef was made the official mobile frontend for that website, and thus, going to that page will show you the contents through a wefwef view.

Also replace all places where I wrote wefwefs with voyager, since they rebranded.

m.address is using voyager as the interface for lemmy.world. Like m.wikipedia has a mobile layout for Wikipedia.

[–] rust 3 points 2 years ago

There is no difference, it’s two websites hosting the same software. The idea I think is to use wefwef as the mobile view for lemmy.world, since you can also use it straight from your browser (the beauty of a web app!).

Awesome thanks for keep updating the app/website stuff. Voyager is the best Lemmy client out there.
