Those key legends seem like they would be all but impossible to read, unless you had perfect lighting.

I think that's the point. They're meant to be a compromise between normal keycaps and blanks. You mostly touch type, but can "cheat" if you can't find a special symbol for example.
It is true, but I stopped reading them a long time ago hah. It is supposed to look completely blank unless you look closely.
