!nostupidquestions is a community dedicated to being helpful and answering each others' questions on various topics.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must be legitimate questions. All post titles must include a question.

All posts must be legitimate questions, and all post titles must include a question. Questions that are joke or trolling questions, memes, song lyrics as title, etc. are not allowed here. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.

Rule 2- Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Questions which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts and joke questions.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-question posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it's in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.

Rule 7- You can't intentionally annoy, mock, or harass other members.

If you intentionally annoy, mock, harass, or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here.

I don't want to block all nsfw content but I really don't want to have to block every new porn community that pops up on lemmynsfw. Is there a way to block all the communities that originate at lemmynsfw?

I think this is a missing feature that is needed.

I think users should be able to filter entire instances. There is at least one that comes to mind that I know for sure doesn't host content that I want to see, but I rather not be forced to hunt for that perfect list of federated instances or run my own server nor should I have to block each community one by one.

It should be really easy to implement, too. Thus, I consider it a missing feature.

I'm already working on just running my own instance lol. But no users, just me. That way I can federate/defederate with whoever I want and call it a day.

[–] BoomBoomLemon 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Any idea on what the monthly cost is going to run?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (2 children)

It’s kinda tricky because you can get a VPS set up really cheap. Like 5 dollars a month cheap or a bit more if you want something more feature rich. But the more instances you federate with, the more storage you’ll need since you’re basically mirroring all of the content you can see. So your cost for storage will go up every month pretty much forever.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Do be aware, if you are charged ingress/egress- that can stack up quickly!

[–] BoomBoomLemon 3 points 1 year ago

I’ll give it a shot. Running self hosted or a VPS isn’t an issue. Thanks.

+1 to wanting this feature. Far be it from me to kinkshame anyone, but some of y'all are into some weird stuff. It hasn't been too terrible to block community by community, but I gotta say - those of you who are into Fur are PROLIFIC with the genres and sub-genres of various yiff related activities. And actively participating! 😂

[–] WhoRoger 15 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Yea those instances that do nothing but sports matches, like yea guys okay, we all enjoy some weird stuff, but keep it in your living rooms

[–] CthuluVoIP 9 points 1 year ago

Right?! We get it. "GOL" Okay. I don't even like Squash, okay?

[–] Discoslugs 6 points 1 year ago

So many furries communities out there. Makes me wonder about my coworkerz.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I feel you. I want to explore other instances/communities outside of the one I’m in, and what I’m subscribed to, but it’s annoying scrolling though porn every other post (even though it’s blurred).

[–] Stilit2446 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

On WefWef a few posts were in unblurring on their own for me. I ended up just blocking NSFW stuff all together for now

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I’m on wefwef too and haven’t had that happen… yet

[–] Stilit2446 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I was sitting next to my girl and a bunch of booty pop up and I closed it real quick and figured out how to block it 😂

[–] Bonzo 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

How do you block communities on wefwef!?

[–] Stilit2446 2 points 1 year ago

I’m not entirely sure, I just blocked all nsfw from my profile. It’s in the settings on Lemmy.world. I’m sure it’s similar for other instances

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago

You could use a userscript extension like Tampermonkey and install this script to be able to block posts and comments from specific instances: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/141704

[–] Drewsteau 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I believe there is a setting in your lemmy.world profile to hide all NSFW content. Try looking at your user settings in browser

[–] teft 26 points 1 year ago (2 children)

This isn't what I'm looking for. I don't mind seeing NSFW content in general. It's just that if you go to sort by new or top hour it's a lot of porn specifically from lemmynsfw and its some weird shit usually. So i'd rather just block their whole instance and not deal with blocking them community by community or by turning off all nsfw content on my profile. If that option exists that is. If it doesn't exist well then who do i petition to perhaps get it in the pipe?

[–] Drewsteau 6 points 1 year ago

Ah I see, sorry for misreading. I believe that there is currently no way to block an instance but I’ve seen people requesting this feature a lot, along with people saying it will be added in the future. Unfortunately I think it’s a waiting game right now

[–] skierra 2 points 1 year ago

You could message the admins here (https://lemmy.world/u/lwadmin) and state your point.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (2 children)

def needs more controls here, you can tag your account so you dont see nsfw, blocking instance requires your instance to de-federate. easiest thing to do might be to find an instance that has rules that align with what you want as they will block/defederate instances that bring content in against those rules (to a degree)

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 year ago (1 children)

While this is a solution in the short term, it's impossible to predict which instance will always align with what the user wants blocked in the future. You can self host and defederate yourself sure, but that's not really a solution for the masses. We really don't need to go as far as defederation for this when all we need is a way for the individual user to block/hide instances at will.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago

Defederation is a heavy hammer for what I view as a UI problem. I just don't want to see a whole swath of communities but still like the instance that federates with them.

[–] foxblood 8 points 1 year ago

A more distinguished way of tagging would be interesting: Like NSFW for porn and NSFL for gore and let’s say NSFH (not safe for health) for alcohol and tobacco etc.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (3 children)

You can do it from kbin if you need a holdover until its built into lemmy.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

To do so, go to the instance's Kbin address with this format: kbin.social/d/[insert instance name here].

For example: kbin.social/d/lemmynsfw.

Then hit the block button in the upper right, under where it says domain.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

You're able to block all media hosted on lemmynsfw (such as pictures shared from there) from being shared on kbin, but it will not block out content that is shared but hosted elsewhere (such as a link to a video). Still better than nothing.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

You can block all lemmynsfw posts on kbin by going to /d/lemmynsfw.com and using the block button. Not only will hosted content be blocked but text posts frim lemmynsfw won't show up either.

Maybe I misunderstand what you mean, though.

[–] nycvin 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Thank goodness you posted this I thought I was hallucinating. I have a kbin.social account and could have sworn I blocked a couple of instances but now I can't for the life of me figure out how I did it! Or what I blocked!

Things are moving and changing fast in the fediverse, keeping up can definitely be a challenge.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Navigate to /d/instance.to.block and you'll find a block button. You can also subscribe to all federated communities from the same page!

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I'm confused. I only see communities to which I intentionally subscribed. Am I doing lemmy wrong?

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If you select to see Subscribed, yes. You can also see Local and All posts.

[–] jobutupaki 3 points 1 year ago

And just to add detail, because I found it confusing when I first joined Lemmy: local shows posts from all communities on your instance, and all shows posts from all instances (your instance is federated with).

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

Not at all. It just that you're using a whitelist (subscribed communities only) while a lot of people like to browse by blacklist (allow everything new, but block specific communities).

[–] MomSpaghetti 4 points 1 year ago

I'm in the same exact situation.

[–] Discoslugs 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Cant you uncheck the "show nsfw" box under settings?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Wouldn't that block all nsfw content and not just porn?

[–] Discoslugs 1 points 1 year ago
[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago

1)Join an instance that’s defederated with that instance.

2)Block each community in your feed you don’t like.

3)Wait until the feature your asking about is implemented.
