No seriously. It took 80 years for someone to invent a can opener. Prior to that, cans had to be opened with knives, hammers, or axes.

A can opener is an understated sign of civility. In a time when a weapon or tool was so ubiquitous as to be the obvious answer to using a can, making a tool to do it is a sign of not having a blunt or sharp object available.

A friend in college discovered you could open beer cans with a can opener so he drank open top Old Mils for an entire semester
