If you find an injured owl:

Note your exact location so the owl can be released back where it came from. Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitation specialist to get correct advice and immediate assistance.

Minimize stress for the owl. If you can catch it, toss a towel or sweater over it and get it in a cardboard box or pet carrier. It should have room to be comfortable but not so much it can panic and injure itself. If you can’t catch it, keep people and animals away until help can come.

Do not give food or water! If you feed them the wrong thing or give them water improperly, you can accidentally kill them. It can also cause problems if they require anesthesia once help arrives, complicating procedures and costing valuable time.

If it is a baby owl, and it looks safe and uninjured, leave it be. Time on the ground is part of their growing up. They can fly to some extent and climb trees. If animals or people are nearby, put it up on a branch so it’s safe. If it’s injured, follow the above advice.

Weird, in Liftoff I just get a blank thumbnail, but clicking it just takes me to an Imgur page and autoplays the GIF. I wonder if it's the instances we're all on, the apps, or some of each.

My Lemmy instance has pictrs enabled. The embedded URL is https://lemmy.sdf.org/pictrs/image/85bf09f4-ec83-4c7b-b986-fc6e2b38aac5.png even though the link URL is https://i.imgur.com/rvsLZjN.gifv

I assume any Lemmy instance with pictrs enabled would be similar, but I'm not totally sure.

Apps would likely access the URL directly or use the imgur API.

Imgur is a little weird because even though that link is a .gifv, it serving an entire HTML page with all sorts of metadata and JavaScript. Open it in your browser and view source.

You might be better off using the direct mp4 link: https://i.imgur.com/rvsLZjN.mp4

Edit: I also want to add that I've used at least half a dozen apps and I've seen a wide variety of different behaviors relating to videos and gifs, particularly when they have audio like this one.

Thank you for all that detail!

I'll just keep doing what I've been doing. I wasn't sure if I was doing something wrong or what. Seems like not every part of Lemmy is at the same relative stage of development. I enjoy watching this stuff grow. In just the short time I've been here, it feels like it's progressed a lot and it's neat to be here for it, road bumps and all.
