I disagree with this sentiment. Lemmy, just as Reddit before it, is a link aggregator, not a forum. This is not a glorified bulletin board, even though it has comments. Text posts are fine, but they are not what I'm here for generally. Discussions can be great on sites like these some times, but if I want to have nuanced conversation with people there are better platforms specifically designed for that.
And honestly, I only see memes taking up like 5-10% of my feed. It was far higher back when I subscribed to [email protected] originally, but that's why I unsubscribed from it. Your experience is going to vary by what community topics you follow

What better discussion platforms are you using? Threaded comments with an upvote system are my ideal for this sort of thing.
