The Smash controller is very good, but not as good as an original. The new one is lighter, is made of cheaper materials (my non-scientific opinion from holding them), and has triggers that can get stuck at certain angles.
But as far as modern GC controllers go, that's probably the best option.
To me they feel almost completely the same I have both here and the only differences they have is that the newer triggers feel a bit different, which could simply be because the old one is 20 years old at this point.
Controller modders would disagree with you. I got a discount on my send-in phob mod because my controller was newer and the modder could repurpose it for other customers.
