The XMPP comment is spot on, I remember pidgin which was an app that cross communicated with other IM applications.

Weird it’s not a thing anymore, I only ever see XMPP on siloed apps these days as their IM function

@Senseibu WhatsApp came along and fucked everything up. But WhatsApp never wanted to federate.
