I think the Northwest Passage being referred is the Elizabeth Islands which is a geographical choke point not unlike the Strait of Malacca. If the Arctic sea ice fully melts then it'll be a very important location to control traffic going to and from the Eastern Seaboard. The only way around coming from Russia is to go East of Greenland. Trump wants Canada and Greenland to act as a shield against Russia and to a lesser extent, China.

If that's his goal (big if) that's the stupidest way possible. Could've literally asked they probably would've. Also if that's his goal why is he simultaneously removing the Russian embargo. This is all also ignoring that krasnov is a Russian asset

The US already has a deal with Denmark basically allowing them unlimited presence on Greenland. A takeover changes nothing except now there's no "buffer state" between the US and Russia.
