The panel report is careful to say there's no evidence he was directly involved, but the issues affect multiple papers with different co-authors over many years, on which he's the common link, so... ๐ค๐ค๐ค...
Sounds like he was running a toxic lab culture where the only way to get recognized was to "win" at science by getting a result that looked groundbreaking. No surprise that fraud was happening and that he was preserving his plausible deniability.
