True story, I met an old, retired CIA spook at a wedding. Dude looked like Col. Sanders, down to having the white suit. So I asked him:
"I don't want you to tell me anything you're not supposed to tell me, but when Kennedy got killed, what was the talk around the water cooler?"
"Oh, hell, we all thought Johnson did it."
No pause, no thoughtful chin rubbing. "We all thought Johnson did it."
I know from context it's the president... But it's much funnier to me to picture they mean Johnson from "accounting"...
That's exactly what I thought. Just homeboy who was pissed about not getting a promotion.
Johnson: "That wasn't me. That was Jumbo."
(For those who might not be in the know, Jumbo was Lyndon Johnson's nickname for his own penis.)
Which he talked about and showed off all the time.
"You ever seen anything like that?"
This is not the first time I have heard a former intell agent being asked that and claiming that they all think it was LBJ.
Its a funny line, but it certainly is not true. Don DeLillo got it mostly right. While the CIA top brass might not have plotted it, consented to it, or even known about it, two specific CIA agents absolutely were plotting a Miami assassination as revenge for demotions following the bay of Pigs.
The CIAs unwillingness to even to this day admit Oswald was part of their false defector program is evidence that they know a lot more than the canned "We thought LBJ did it," response they give.
I always liked this scene from the movie Shooter in a similar vein. still got the shovel
