How about taking a page out of Super Metroid’s playbook and make the ascension a desperate scramble to get out? Instead of a curse that rewards slow/methodical play (killing a few enemies on each floor to keep the curse down), have something horrible pursuing you! Have the walls shaking and the ceiling collapsing down!
It’s all about pacing. After you defeat the final boss and grab the amulet you’re on such a high! The game really should match that high with an appropriate level of danger and speed!
