On day 3 continuing an online argument (on that other site) with someone around the banning of nazi hand gestures in Victoria (in light of the recent court case).

I'm totally for the ban, the other person doesn't believe government should ban body movements and expressions.

My pettiness and stubborn nature will not let this go.

After learning about the atrocities of WWII in school, I never thought I would see real life Nazis, and that they aren't being killed on sight.

I think we should go a step further than banning nazi salutes, we should be allowed to lock up any self-proclaimed nazi. How is it okay?? I used to have dreams about killing Nazis in war, how am I this close to realising those childhood dreams!? Wtf.

Edit: also stopped telling anyone I'm half-German. I school I used to be called Nazi, in not inviting that shit back on myself again bahaha

The argument against the ban is usually 'government shouldn't ban a single gesture' or 'what if they start banning other body movements'.

If Germany can ban this gesture and punish people doing it, so can we quite easily.

Agreed!

As in I agree that Germany handles that stuff really well, they shut that crap down so fast.

I get the argument about body movements, but we're not talking about giving someone the middle finger; we're talking about Nazi salutes and the meaning behind the ideology, and how it is evil. It would behoove those Redditors to comprehend the difference.

I sometimes think we don’t do enough to stop things from happening.

They can ban it all they want but people keep doing it and I assume because there’s not much of a penalty and lack of consequences associated with it.

I would like to see more severe punishments for doing it or displaying things like that.

It was an absolutely horrible era in history and see them backing those atrocities is awful.

I think the ban is good as it can lead to criminal charges and punishments. Might prevent some from doing it, which is already a win.

Generally I don't condone violence, but punching a Nazi is never a bad thing

I haven’t been kept up to date with things but I there are some white supremacy groups and nazi groups in Victoria that I was made aware of and I wouldn’t mind seeing them behind bars myself to be honest.

Group like that shouldn’t really exist.

I’m all for preserving history and records but not as a living embodiment with groups like that.

It's the standard playback of 'you're being unreasonable' and they can go choke on their own arses. They're fucking nazi cosplay wankers throwing seig heils and they can get fucked.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

Yeah honestly. Banning Nazi signals is not a slippery slope and the 'free speech' brigade is soooo annoying.

USA has free speech and look how well that works. Empowering hate groups ain't the way forward.

I was at school with the Red Baron’s granddaughter. She wore SS uniform to the formal. Try getting away with that now…

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Red Baron was WWI, would he even have been a nazi if he survived?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Who knows? But look at the career of Hermann Goering .... also a WWI flying ace, and the Red Baron's bossman.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Both good points. It's hard to know what somebody's beliefs would be when they pass so young.

It's an interesting thought experiment, would the red Baron subscribed to Nazism because of the environment (his boss), or would he have been against that ideology?

Edit: his granddaughter is apparently a piece of work tho lol

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yup. Had a permanent note to get out of PE, spent it all reading MKampf. Her essays in Modern History were apparently quite something.

Ah yep, Prussian Aristocratic family, yeah RB would prolly be a Nazi

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

Um, a Freiherr from Silesia is only marginally Prussian I think, albeit one of 'ancient' lineage. Could well be wrong about that. Also, RB could well have kicked back against Goering who was a real piece of work even before Nazism. Might even have succeeded due to hero status with the general public of Germany. Much more liked and admired than Goering. As you said, we'll never know for certain sure. Which is probably a good thing.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

Oops. And no idea. She certainly was.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago

No you didn’t.

He never married and had no known children. She was bullshitting you

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Sounds like arguing with a brick wall to be honest.

Your energy might be better spent on something else.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 month ago

Honestly, I'm having a bit of fun. Probably more frustrating for them :)

I'm cruising at work right now and have tomorrow off, so got the time to be a dick.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I think we should reverse the ban. its stupid.

its too hard to hit a nazi in the face with a shovel when they are in prison or before the courts.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago

I imagine most sentences would be heavy probation and fines. Neither of which prevent a good shovelling to the head.
