Not really

Conservative 'protesters' get treated with kid gloves, or pardoned by the governor of Texas. They usually don't get charged. They have friends in the forces.

Progressive protestors get maced, shot, beat to shit, locked up, maybe charged but probably not since they are more frequently non violent, and then they maybe get a settlement.

E.g., how will this help those protesting cop city? The cops are already ignoring the law.

People love to cheer on the defense of the worst protestors and promotors of violence because "it ensures the rights for everyone" seems to miss the part where it is only used to ensure the rights of the the worst people.

No, the ACLU defensing nazis doesn't benefit everyone when protestors for peace in Palestine are violently assaulted by the police.

The ACLU defends civil liberties for everyone and is an overall force for good. Nazis have the right to say nazi shit here. Them being morally repugnant wastes of space has little to do with their right to free speech. The government cannot limit protected speech and that's a good thing.

Also the ACLU has nothing to do with corrupt cops being violent pigs. Actually, they fight to end qualified immunity for those very people:

Nazis have the right to say nazi shit here.

Nobody has the right to call for genocide.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago

Maybe not. That could qualify as inciting "imminent lawless action." perhaps?

This is obviously not a moral judgement on my part, just the law

The assumption here being that courts do nothing ever and that the justice system doesn’t exist.

Seems ignorant and reductive but I’m not an expert

[–] [email protected] 16 points 4 months ago (1 children)

The courts absolutely do something. My point is that most of the damage is done before it reaches the court.

Cops don't arrest cops or people on their team. But when they do, prosecutors don't charge cops. Cops do arrest nonviolent protestors. Prosecutors do charge nonviolent protestors. Later those charges are dropped, or they're set free with an agreement not to sue the department, or occasionally there's a settlement, that taxes pay for.

Thank you for elaborating. It makes your point much more clear.

I want to abolish prison, then police, personally.

[–] themeatbridge 5 points 4 months ago

The courts are unreliable due to corruption, and we do not have a functioning justice system.

So you're saying you haven't been paying attention. Must be nice to be so privileged you don't have to worry about it.

You sound like a very pleasant person who is focused on their own self improvement. Long road ahead?
