I was guessing the movie was Superman Returns, just because of how ironic it would have been.

The article says it was a canceled JJ Abrams movie called "Superman: Fly-by"

That's about the level of creativity I expect from abrams. "See Superman flys, so the movie is called fly by! It's evocative!"

That's what I was thinking... 2001 to 2003? Being gay didn't seem to hurt Bryan Singer... X-Men was 2000. X2 was 2003.

Singer left the franchise to do Superman Returns in 2006.

Well, Singer was behind the camera, but he also came up with the most homoerotic looking Superman:

I mean, that was a different studio and media company... easily possibly that Warner had a homophobic manager up in the food chain while Fox did not
