Long story short, coworker was talking about how he upgraded from a 3080 to a 4080 last week. He asked if I was interested in buying his old 3080 for 400 USD. I told him yes of course (my gaming pc still running a 970 and I’m getting back into PC gaming after a long break).

Well today he comes in, says he was mistaken, it’s actually a 3060 and because of that he’s willing to sell it for 300 USD. I thanked him but after seeing new 3060s for sale on Amazon for the same price I’m thinking that I need to haggle or look for another card. Thoughts?

TLDR: Used 3060 for 200-250 USD, new 3060 for 300 USD or another option preferably vram min 10gb. Very top end of my budget (stretching it) is $450-500. I want to game at 4k (I know “good luck” but I wouldn’t mind settling for 1440) and have a respectable bump up in graphics performance from the Xbox series X or else the purchase isn’t really worth it to me, as the Xbox is already doing 4k @120 hz on my TV. Yes I know the Xbox 4k is probably upscaled.

Hi so my gaming laptop just died ( water damage ). Usualy i would be looking for a universal laptop but finally i finished university so i likely wont need laptop any more . So right now im looking to dab into proper PC finally. And im looking for help to build a pc. Im mostly decided on the cpu front 7800x3d most likely and im looking for somewhat decent gpu for 1080p ,maybe 1440p gaming( if you are wondering why such a strong mismatch between gpu and cpu dosent bither me , i mostly play Europa universalis 4 , stellaris and other strategy games so extremly fast cpu is a priority , and apparently eu4 benefits quite a lot from 3d vcache . GPU meanwhile, if it can play total war warhammer 3 on max details its good enough ) . It can be either radeon or nvidia( i like to dabble as a hobby in ai models so nvidia would be cool ,but on the other hand i ran linux and nvidia is a pain in the ass on linux ,also i can manage without cuda cores somehow). Frankly speaking im just looking for the most decent price to performance indicator. Also what should i know about motherboards are there any important things or should i just look out for the chepeast possible one for that cpu .

Other than that cables. Do i need any additional cables or would they come with cpu power supply etc....?

If anyone was still taking them seriously, they sure as hell aren't now.

EDIT: Wow, this was an exercise in humility

Turns out, when i disconnected my PC display cables before the hardware swap, my monitors were still on and swapped inputs from Display Port to HDMI. When I was swapping cables and checking connections, I didn't even think to check that the monitors were set to input the right connection.

I'll be leaving this post up for anyone else in the future who might find themselves in my position. Check your monitors input!

~~A few days ago, I made a post about being gifted a EVGA 3090 RTX from my brother-in-law and was asking for help figuring out what I'd need to upgrade to run the new card from my 1070. Here is a link to that post. Before this week, it had been about seven years since I'd looked into computer hardware, and even at my best-researched I was never super knowledgeable on the subject. You all said that most of my components would be great, but I upgraded my PSU to a Corsair RM1000X 1,000-watt unit.~~

~~Since installing my GPU (Literally fifteen minutes ago), I'm getting no video from any of the outputs. The PC seems to be powering on fine because the lights on my peripherals are working. Just to be clear, the screen doesn't flash and then go black, I'm getting no video at all.~~

~~I followed this video 100% before removing my old GPU. The last thing I did was run a DDU before shutting down the system.~~

Obligatory system specs:

  • Ryzen 9 5900x CPU

  • EVGA 3090 RTX GPU

  • MSI Tomahawk B550 MoBo

  • 32gb RAM

  • Corsair RM1000X PSU

Title pretty much tells you all you need to know about my situation. In a turn of events tonight I've been gifted a used but working EVGA 3090 card to replace my seven year old 1070.

My current system hardware specs are:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12-Core (upgraded from Ryzen 5 last year)

GPU: MSI 1070

MoBo: MSI MAG B550 TOMAHAWK

PSU - Corsair CX-550 550 Watt

x4 8GB Installed Memory

I also have a 2tb SSD drive with my OS and games installed, and 4 8tb HDD for media.

My main concern is with needing to replace my MoBo with a x3 PCi board and worries about my PSU not being powerful enough. I'm not particularly worried about my tower is a Phanteks Enthoo Pro PH-ES614PC_BK.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT January 6, 2024:

All games have been accepted by the winners! Thanks everyone for your participation! I loved reading the different messages and hearing some of the positives, the things that made you feel hopeful, and a bit about some of the games you've played. While I wish I could give you all more copies of games, we will do another giveaway like this in the future.

Stay safe, and happy 2024 ahead!

EDIT January 5, 2024:

Minor edit for posterity. All games have been claimed apart from God of War. Each winner of God of War never responded so I'm working down the list through a randomizer to select the eligible winner for this game. I'll update this post one final time as soon as we have an eligible winner that claims this final giveaway.

EDIT January 4, 2024:

There was no response received for the selected winners for Elden Ring and God of War.

I am re-drawing for both these games and will update this post once these final two game codes are accepted by the new winners.

EDIT January 3, 2024:

All games have been claimed apart from two: Elden Ring and God of War. Considering it is the holiday and there may be some obligations, I'm extending the 24 hour window by another 24 hours. If the winners do not reply by Jan 4, 2024 ~ 9 AM ET, they will be forfeit and I will re-draw new winners.

EDIT January 2, 2024:

Giveaway Ended! All winners have been notified, but they have 24 hours to respond. If the winner does not respond, I will re-draw for the new winner the next day until all codes have been exhausted.

I will also be editing this post periodically to acknowledge who won and if they accepted.

I loved reading all these comments, and thanks for everyone responding here and also sharing an optional story! There's a lot of positivity and hope out there, which makes me also feel the same.

P.S. - I really wish I could afford more games to giveaway to you all, but we can certainly do something like this in the future and perhaps make some kind of collaborative giveaway.

Stay safe, and happy new year ahead!

So my last post, my dad found his 3rd computer... he finally found his first computer!

Bonus: Back of the receipt has some additional purchases: https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/8ed5e2cb-3a29-4a8d-9f0f-347cc41771f2.jpeg

I overlock my Gigabyte RTX 3060 12GB OC with MSI Afterburner, with Mem at +550, Core at +55, Voltage at 100%, temp limit at 90C and power limit at 124 (which are the highest possible for temp and power). I stress tested it with FurMark for over 30 minutes and the highest temp I've got is like 67-68C, on very rare occasions it reaches 69 (nice), I got a 70 once and never reach it again. I've read that overclocking reduces the GPU lifespan since it causes more stress and high temp. But mine is no where close to thermal limit so I wonder if overclocking is harmful to the card if the temp is below the thermal limit.

There's a genre of game I've always wanted to get into, but I can't think of any titles off the top of my head.

Usually the game is colonial, pirate, or sci-fi themed. You go around buying and selling stuff, maintaining and upgrading your ship, and dealing with stuff that happens.

I want to play a game like that what should I play.

Banana for scale but, also, the desk is 6' long and the little monitor is 43" (and will be re-purposed elsewhere).

So I was changing the case fans, after I put everything back together, I forgot to plug in the power for the GPU. I turned the pc on and I saw the white LED on GPU power port lid up and heard the fan spins like crazy (I don't know if it was the CPU fan or the GPU fans), I panicked and immediately turned off the power supply.

Everything happened in less than 2 seconds, I've run some stress tests and gamed for a few hours and nothing bad happened (yet?) so I assumed everything is still fine (for now?).

What happens if I had left it on like that for longer? And why did the fan ram up like that?

Those were some good specs back in the day... And the price 😯

Just built a new computer maxed out everything except for RAM and the GPU.

I had 32GB of lovely 8GB DDR4 1Rx4 ECC'd Server grade DIMMS (stable and responsive). My plan to go crazy with 2nd hand server RAM went balls-up when turns out my over the top motherboard doesn't support 1Rx4, bloody brilliant! So stuck with a spare 4GB stick for now.

The GPU is just a spare one i have laying around (got 6 GPUs, 4 in computers). I will be swapping my old rig that has a Radeon 550 (equivalent to a GTX 1030, same gen as well)

So here is a lovely screenshot of my bodged computer, eith a top of the line CPU, motherboard, with only 4GB of RAM and a 9 year old GPU (and a Free Speech Flag to top it off)

There is a magnetic top vent filter that comes with the case but it covers the top rear exhaust fan so I don't really want to put it on.

Yes, I know the pc is dirty, but I'm getting a new PSU after Christmas so I'll clean it then.

I recently reinstalled windows on my pc, and looked at pcmr on reddit to find a post of someone complaining about gsync, on nvidia systems, not beeing enabled by default everywhere.

That reminded me the pain it is to help someone enable it, with an ugly and hard to understand (for noobs) nvidia tutorial, and even worse with a freesync display.

On my system, with an amd card, and a freesync premium display, once the drivers were installed, freesync was enabled and no issues, nothing do fiddle with, it was just enabled automatically for all the system and windows to use.

Wonder why nvidia can't do that.

It even set automatically my display to 165hz (tho maybe that could have been because it already was at 165 before the reinstall?).

There is still the trick to lower the max fps 3/4fps lower than the max hz of the display to teach, for better smoothness. But that is just an easy to do trick.

I bought this PC 2 months ago. Yesterday, I had to transport it by car. Even though I packed it in the original box with foam, when I tried to set it up again, I noticed that this cable, which I had secured with electrical tape, was loose. I'm sure it wasn't loose before.

I know it's some kind of power cable, but I don't know where to plug it in (I'm not a hardware guy).

Note: The PC is turning on and functioning normally. I don't know if it's related or just a coincidence, but my headphones that I usually connect to the back stopped working.

Can someone shed some light on this?
