BONUS TOMT:

I'm looking for the name of a FLOSS Quake1-mod, puzzle game, that was about placing gravity points, to curve a stream of particles around the level, and eventually into the goal target. (May have used irrlicht) If anyone knows the name of this one, please let me know, it is my white-whale of games.

They just joined the Fediverse as well at:

I've never played Roblox or Fortnite so I have no reference there. But The Mirror, while still Alpha, was lots of fun to try out and works just fine on Linux out of the box for me on Debian using the Itch Flatpak.

Freedoom - An FPS action game (freedoom.github.io)
submitted 10 months ago by jazztickets to c/foss_gaming

In 1999 id Software released the source code to their classic game Doom (under the GNU General Public License). The game as a whole did not get this treatment, however, which means that while the program code that powers Doom is free, the actual content of Doom - graphics, audio, levels, setting and characters - remains proprietary. The Freedoom project aims to fill this gap and create a complete free and libre first person shooter game.

By itself, Freedoom is just the content of a game and must be paired with a Doom-compatible game engine to be played: the download page lists some recommended programs.

heXon is a free and open source twin-stick-shooter created using the Dry game engine. To score high you must fly well, avoiding the Notyous and destroying them with your Whack-o-Slack blast battery. Your firepower can be increased by collecting five apples. Picking up five hearts in a row will charge your shield. All edges of the hexagonal arena are connected to its opposite like portals, making for a puzzlingly dangerous playing field that might take some experience to wrap your head around.

I want to install a local version of this game in the link and preferably open source. I searched "shape game" and couldn't find anything.

Use case: before operating heavy machinery, I want to "pass" this game at 8 seconds

BRACKEYS

Hello everyone!

It’s been a while. I hope you are all well.

Unity has recently taken some actions to change their pricing policy that I - like most of the community - do not condone in any way.

I have been using Unity for more than 10 years and the product has been very important to me. However, Unity is a public company. Unfortunately that means that it has to serve shareholder interests. Sometimes those interests align with what is best for the developers and sometimes they do not. While this has been the case for a while, these recent developments have made it increasingly clear.

Unity has pulled back on the first version of their new pricing policy and made some changes to make it less harmful to small studios, but it is important to remember that the realities of a public company are not going to change.

Luckily, there are other ways of structuring the development of software. Instead of a company owning and controlling software with a private code base, software can be open source (with a public code base that anyone can contribute to) and publicly owned. Blender - a stable 3D modelling software in the game dev community - is free and open source. In fact some of the largest and most advanced software in the world is built on top of open source technology like Linux.

The purpose of this post is not to denounce Unity because of a misstep, to criticise any of its employees or to tell anyone to “jump ship”. Instead I want to highlight the systematic issue of organizing large software projects under a public company and to let you know that there are alternatives.

I believe that the way to a stronger and more healthy game dev community is through software created by the community for the community. Software that is open source, democratically owned and community funded.

Many of you have been asking for us to produce new tutorial series on alternative engines such as Godot, which is currently the most advanced open source and community funded game engine. I don’t know yet if this is something that we can realise and when.

I can only say that I have started learning Godot.

Best of luck to all of you with your games, no matter what engine they might be built on!

Sincerely,

Asbjern Thirslund - Brackeys

Nexuiz was originally developed by Lee Vermeulen and Ashley Hale (Ladyhavoc), who started Alientrap in the summer of 2002. The goal of the project was to create a high quality first person shooter that could be played freely across all platforms in one package: PC, Mac, and Linux. The engine that powered Nexuiz was Forest Hale’s Darkplaces engine.

The first version of the game was released in 2005. Development continued with many online contributors over the years, with version 2.5 released in October of 2009. Since its release it has been downloaded over 6 million times, and is included with many Linux distributions.

In mid-2010 it was announced that a new XBLA, PSN, and Steam downloadable remake of Nexuiz would be done from the ground up by IllFonic using Crytek’s CryENGINE3 game engine. Original Nexuiz designer Forest ‘LordHavoc’ Hale worked with Illfonic on the new version, many of the GPL contributors forked the project into a new game Xonotic, while Lee Vermeulen moved towards Capsized development. Illfonic’s Nexuiz was released for XBLA in February 2012, and Steam May 3rd 2012.
