The tragedy of the commons is when too many people use a public resource in a way that is unsustainable.

Close, but not.

The "overuse" is an aspect of mismanagement of the commons, it's not simply about overuse, it's about the management. The understanding that "someone just used up all that nice stuff" is poor, even in accordance with the author of this theory.

The tragedy is that the its so mismanaged that it allows an asshole to ruin it for everyone. That's not some default, that's what happens when you have poor management. Plenty of commons have good management and it's a known field and theory. If you want to go by this view, you can read Ostrom who actually researched the issue of management:

https://aeon.co/essays/the-tragedy-of-the-commons-is-a-false-and-dangerous-myth

https://tn.boell.org/en/2023/04/19/5-elinor-ostrom-et-les-huit-principes-de-gestion-des-communs (look for YouTube lectures too).

In practice, however, what you describe as the asshole greedily and selfishly taking from the commons is literally the act of privatization. Which is why the usual capitalist "solution" to this problem - official privatization - is a failure.

Here's also a humorous podcast explaining what's wrong with it: https://player.fm/series/srsly-wrong/ep-235-the-imaginary-tragedy-of-the-hypothetical-commons in case you like to listen.

Squashing

The s "squash" command is where we see the true utility of rebase. Squash allows you to specify which commits you want to merge into the previous commits. This is what enables a "clean history." During rebase playback, Git will execute the specified rebase command for each commit. In the case of squash commits, Git will open your configured text editor and prompt to combine the specified commit messages. This entire process can be visualized as follows:

Note that the commits modified with a rebase command have a different ID than either of the original commits. Commits marked with pick will have a new ID if the previous commits have been rewritten.

https://www.atlassian.com/git/tutorials/rewriting-history

You can also amend for a softer approach, which works better if you don't push to remote after every commit.

The git commit --amend command is a convenient way to modify the most recent commit. It lets you combine staged changes with the previous commit instead of creating an entirely new commit. It can also be used to simply edit the previous commit message without changing its snapshot. But, amending does not just alter the most recent commit, it replaces it entirely, meaning the amended commit will be a new entity with its own ref. To Git, it will look like a brand new commit, which is visualized with an asterisk (*) in the diagram below.

You can keep amending commits and creating more chunky and meaningful ones in an incremental way. Think of it as converting baby steps into an adult step.

This is a very tiny step, like a cow calf rising up and making a step right before they're abducted to a veal crate/cage far away from their distressed mother.

Unfortunately, the "Processed Food Moral Panic" has been taken over by the meat and dairy industries, so people will not be learning why it's important to eat lots of plants as whole foods.

It's a waste of time, the "NOVA" system is subjective and it makes testing it a dead end. Your question will not be answered.

It also doesn't teach nutrition to the people; the core application of it is demonizing food that isn't cooked at home, as if something made in a small home kitchen is magically healthful.

If you want to get a better grasp, here's a nice and short read: (shorter than a book) Series 5: Is the Ultra-processed Food (UPF) concept useful, and for what goals? | TABLE Debates

This is the kind of stuff the timber mafia needs to know so that they can efficiently pack trees and send them to IKEA.

InfluenceMap’s new analysis outlines a campaign over the last three years stemming from the meat and dairy industry against policy efforts to address the sector’s climate impact. The strategic advocacy appears to have had a significant impact on the ambition of EU policymaking related to the production and consumption of meat and dairy products in Europe.

  • This report examines corporate engagement from ten companies and five industry associations in the meat and dairy sector on six EU policies to reduce emissions in line with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 2019 Special Report on Climate Change and Land use and 2022 Working Group III recommendations.
  • The analysis suggests a split between different parts of the meat and dairy sector, with consumer goods focused companies, such as Unilever and Nestlé, appearing to engage more positively on the EU policies covered by this report than meat and dairy producer companies, such as Arla and Danish Crown. Industry associations representing these companies were highly engaged on these policies, appearing to align with the more oppositional positions taken by food producer companies.
  • Meat and dairy producers, and the industry associations that represent them, use a combination of strategic narrative building and detailed policy engagement that mirrors the tactics of the fossil fuel industry to obstruct climate policy tackling the sector’s emissions. Both sectors employ similar misleading narratives through strategic public messaging to sow doubt and undermine the need to tackle GHG emissions from the meat and dairy sector.

  • The industry's efforts appear to have largely succeeded in attempts to weaken key climate policies aimed at the sector in the EU. Following intense corporate advocacy on the policies in 2020-23, a third of the policies included in this report were significantly weakened and half appear to have stalled following oppositional advocacy from companies and industry associations. This includes policies such as the Sustainable Food Systems Framework, a ‘flagship’ policy of the Farm to Fork Strategy, and the revision of the Industrial Emissions Directive which regulates pollutant emissions from European farms.
  • Intensive advocacy appears to have influenced the main European conservative political party’s narratives regarding opposition to specific policies affecting the transition of diets and agricultural sector emissions, as well as their approach to the 2024 EU election. In 2022-23, the European People’s Party’s points of opposition to key policies and reducing GHG emissions from the sector mirrored narratives pushed by meat and dairy producers and the industry associations that represent them.

The marker approach is taken as best practice for answering the distribution question: Which animals are conscious? However, the methodology can be used to increase confidence in animals many presume to be unconscious, including C. elegans, leading to a trilemma: accept the worms as conscious; reject the specific markers; or reject the marker methodology for answering the distribution question. I defend the third option and argue that answering the distribution question requires a secure theory of consciousness. Accepting the hypothesis all animals are conscious will promote research leading to secure theory, which is needed to create reliable consciousness tests for animals and AIs. Rather than asking the distribution question, we should shift to the dimensions question: How are animals conscious?

Upcoming hearing of three land defenders of the Wet'suwet'en Nation facing criminalization

On 17 June 2024, the British Columbia Supreme Court will hold a hearing on the case against human rights defenders Sleydo’ Molly Wickham, Shaylynn Sampson and Corey Jayochee Jocko. The hearing concerns the abuse of process application filed by the defenders after they were found guilty of criminal contempt of court on 12 January 2024. Front Line Defenders will join an international delegation to British Columbia as part of an observation team of the trial.
