Memmy stopped loading content for me a few days ago. Not sure what happened. I’m currently using liftoff.

I do a lot of emulation and gaming currently on three portable devices:

  • Powkiddy X55 - 8, 16, and 32 bit, plus various ports like Doom, Duke Nukem, Fallout, TMNT: Shredder's Revenge, others.
  • 2DS XL - NDS and 3DS. Some GBA and 8/16 bit, but the Powkiddy took over a lot of that.
  • Samsung Tab S7 FE tablet - Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube, and native Android games and ports.

I'm surprised how much mileage I get out of these devices, and how little I turn on my gaming PC these days.

I mean, it’s a pretty solid 8 and 16 bit emulation device and can natively play GBA and NDS games. What’s not to like?

I feel you. I quit my job at the end of January 2020 due to a health issues and… well, you know what came right after. Focused on getting my health right and then had a job lined up that fell through due to pandemic related terminations and suddenly I qualified for unemployment.

Got to relax for 6 months for the most part and destress, and in June 2020 got interviewed for a “dream job” at a company that was a long term goal for me. Hired on, started fully remote in August 2020 and have been doing the thing since.

Wife and I are already extreme introverts so this worked out swimmingly. Big pay bumps and bonuses, bought a fairly cheap home in the rurals and I’m living comfortably.

Pandemic times have been pretty good to me honestly, and wearing a mask to go out and stay safe is really no big deal.

That’s wild, I just bought this last night on the GOG sale. I played it many years back and it scared the piss out of me.

Nice! BTW, not related to this post but GOG also has a huge summer sale going on right now. I picked up SimCity 2,3, and 4, as well as all the Legacy of Kain games, and Doom 3 (I'm excited to give that one a shot on my Powkiddy X55, it's in portmaster).

Glad to help, it was a fun experiment. :)

I find game streaming is a "nice-to-have" option but the reality for me has always been inferior to playing direct on PC, even when I was using the Nvidia Shield TV or Shield tablet back in the day. With my current tablet (Samsung Tab S7 FE) streaming via Steam Link app is... decent, better and smoother than any other options I've tried (Moonlight and AMD Link), but I'd still just rather play locally. But the streaming experience has never been "good enough" for me. Plus, I'm extremely latency sensitive, to the point I even usually use wired gamepads these days.

I'm a little spoiled though, since my gaming PC is right under the TV and I game from my recliner. generally have no need to stream.

Okay, one more post, I got it working. Had to delete the initial config file to fix the screen, then remap the inputs in Steam so they'd match up the controls.

In testing, I found that it does not play nice at 60 fps, so 720p 30 fps, at a bandwidth of 12000 mbps seems to work best. Latency seemed fine.

Might be good for slower paced games like RPGs, but most AAA games will be rough on the tiny screen, and fast paced titles will suffer for the reduced framerate. I tested it mainly playing Dead Cells and Wizard of Legend.

Okay, tested again after deleting .config/moonlight/moonlight.conf. It's working now screen-wise, but the controls are reversed (a is b, b is a, etc). Also working out how to close it cleanly.

Yo, Crumble has actually turned out to be pretty great!

F-Zero GX is much harder in the story mode stuff. F-Zero X varies depending on difficulty setting and cup selected.

Tested it out, the experience is definitely half-baked, needs more work. I set up sunshine, connected my tablet and the X55. On the X55 it's in some weird super ultrawide mode, like 32:9 or wider and only taking up a strip in the middle of the screen. Looks super squished. It's working normally on the tablet.

I can't find any config file for moonlight on the handheld so it's kind of a wash. I've even removed all possible resolutions except what the X55 can do, no change.

I'll reach out on the JELOS discord to see if there's a fix.

That said, when comparing with my tablet, Steam Link is still definitely better performing and lower latency for sure.
