Damn, that's a jam. I generally don't have high expectations for original GB games but sometimes that little handheld surprises me.

Oh wow, I haven't thought of OC Remix in years. I used to love their SF2 remix (Blood on the Asphalt), and the AC For Answer one.

Either set up alphabetical folders for the roms (folder A, B, C, D, etc.) or you'll need to use something else to browse and run ROMs. I will say the R4i Gold 3DS Plus is a solid flashcart if you can get one, and it should have less issues with browsing and scrolling than TwilightMenu.

Be sure to update the factory files to point it to a better external player. The built in one for Jellyfin sounds terrible.

Eh, I like Plexamp’s features, but the app is not exactly free, more “freemium.” All the compelling features that you’d want to use it for are behind the subscription paywall. DJ, track and album radio, the unique features aren’t free.

Also, at least on iOS the app feels clunky and sluggish with long delays when skipping, scrubbing, playing, and pausing. (EDIT - turns out this is specifically an issue when using Airplay, it's fine for local playback).

My wife uses Plexamp on desktop (Mac and PC) and it seems good there. I personally tend to use the WiiM app for Wiim mini with Asset UPnP server.

Yikes, that sounds terrible.

I actually really liked handhelds back in the day and still do. I had the original Game Boy, eventually the GB Pocket and GBA, and the Nintendo DS Lite was one of my favorite devices of all time.

But now though? I can’t fathom something smaller than the 2DS XL and even with the Powkiddy x55 there’s games I’m like… this is gray but let me move this over to my tablet.

I feel like 7-8” display is the sweet spot for me, but finding a reasonably powerful device in that form factor is just a no-go unless I want to spring for the Steam Deck. Tablets in that size tend to be trash.

I’ve yet to see a handheld with one, but the Sony dpad, specifically from the PS2 and PS3 era was perfect.

I had an Android telescopic gamepad with one a ways back and it was great.

I'm fairly certain I'm ND, but never fully knew if it was Autism (Aspergers?) or ADHD. Mom never followed up on the testing when I was a kid (and neither did I as an adult), but autism runs high in my family, and I have low and high functioning extended family.

Yeah, definitely not ADHD. I have issues, stims, triggers, but I'm functional, and can definitely form habits, and don't necessarily experience the issues noted here.

After seeing this post and the article, I just blocked my LG C1 from WAN at my router. LAN still available for automation purposes, but fuck letting that thing out to the internet now. Funny enough, it turns on faster, and no more notification splash at the bottom. Nice.

There aren't a lot of non-Android options at 8". There's the Kobo Sage, and the Pocketbook Inkpad Color. And that's kind of it.

Nothing wrong with Android per se, but yeah, Boox generally doesn't upgrade the OS, and only offers occasional feature/security updates. They also don't allow rolling back firmware if there's an issue.

I have a Boox Nova 2 that I bought in late 2020 and it's stuck on Android 9. Given security concerns, I disable Google Play and generally keep it offline, as well as using Netguard. But personally, I'd avoid an Android based eReader unless it suits your specific purposes. The Nova 2 did for me at the time but I no longer need a lot of the functionality, I'm retiring it for a Paperwhite Signature soon.

Well, android 11 isn’t too old

Hate to break it to you, but Android 11 released nearly three years ago (September 2020). Android 13 released 11 months ago and 14 is currently available for development betas.

For Android eReadders my personal recommendation is to use Netguard, keep your device offline and only go online when absolutely necessary. And after a point, you should disable Google Play and disconnect your account from it.

Personally, I'm retiring my Boox Nova 2 soon. It's stuck on Android 9, and it's less than three years old. Disappointing, but that's a big security concern.
