Yeah and the fact that they allow plugins in the first place is great. It's a great way to gauge what's in demand and how it could be implemented. Reminds me of games that allow modding/addons and often key features are later added officially.

Ah yes, there isn't even an option to permanently disable this popup, only remind me later. When the operating system is the nag ware. `

Oh man, thanks for linking this. I'm glad there's someone out there writing plug-ins but Valve should really provide this out of box.

True, gives me something to ponder about.

One of my takeaways from the whole ordeal is that people don't need to be economically desperate, just feeling so goes a long way. The US has had one of the best post covid recoveries. Objectively the US economy is in decent shape but then if you listen to Trump's hustings' you could think that the US is in a deep recession akin to the 1930s, whilst also on the brink of world war 3 and overrun by migrant crime gangs. Combine that with the massive amount of targeted misinformation on social media and you get a new situation in which people are relatively well off (on the grand scale of history) yet radicalized as if destitute.

Ok, sounds good.*but do I have to write manual commit logs whenever a config file changes? Feels like a hassle to track down and understand all the specifics. For instance when are app updates to new version with new features and that is reflected in new config files. I currently use freefilesync for backups and keep up to 5 version of old files.

Thing is: it was the backup that I accidentally overwrote.

Sure, for many things there's a deluxe version (clothing, cars, food, housing) but they tend to be physical. Since media is largely digital these days and has fantastic marginal distribution costs the rich consume the same stuff when it comes to popular media. Ie there isn't an alternate Hollywood studio just for the rich, itunes doesn't have a separate server, the new york times website is the same for all, etc.

I know the feel, many years ago I chose the wrong folder and overwrote all my video recordings.

So after I last updated my deck I got a generic error message. No biggie. But then suddenly on the next reboot: stuck at the boot logo. Tried lots of things, no way of getting back in. Not with the current kernel, not with the previous one. Really annoying as I use my deck as a general purpose computer too.

So I created a recovery USB. Reinstalling the OS (which attempts to preserve user data and games) failed silently. So I reluctantly copied my entire home folder to an external drive and went with the nuclear option of completely reimaging the internal drive. After steam os finished installation I restored my entire home folder from the backup and restarted the machine.

I was expecting to having to manually reinstall and reconfigure so many apps and settings. And was verily not looking forward to it. But lo and behold: pretty much everything worked just the way it did before the fumbled system update. My desktop layout and window arrangements remained the same, settings and preferences were preserved, it didn't even log me out of email account. No manual imports of settings required. I had to reinstall most apps via the Discover store first, that much is true. But that took just a couple of minutes.

So yeah, really happy with how that went. Last time I had to reinstall everything on a Windows system it was a major pain as settings are all over the place (on the system drive, in the registry, inside appdata, inside the my documents folder, etc). I guess it has to do with the Linux philosophy of "everything is a file".

In the future I'll actually move my /home/ folder to my SSD card so that if this ever happens again the process is even less painful.

PSA: when you backup your home folder make sure to include all the hidden folders and files (anything starting with a dot like the .config folder).

The reason why English, French and Spanish are among the world's most widespread languages has its roots in the imperial past of the nations where they originate

Must be a hot day in Hong Kong for them to be throwing shade like that. It's true of course but it's true for all of the biggest languages that conquest played a significant part in their dispersal. Chinese, Arabic, etc are left out of the statement for some reason.

¿Does it comment on your life with latent cynicism, in prosaic tone and with a deep, haughty voice like Wayne June (narrator of Darkest Dungeon)? Damn, now I want one too.

Don't know how (or if) I can upload video clips directly to Lemmy, so I used Imgur instead.

I'm also using the deck as a work machine and for that I connect an external monitor, keyboard, mouse. Getting the monitor to display correctly is quite the hassle though.

Suspends, reboots, turning off the dock's power overnight or switching tween gaming and desktop mode all can cause issues with the external display being detected properly. Sometimes the deck uses it's internal display instead. Or worse both screens stay black and I have to restart the deck by holding the power button. Other times the desktop environment uses the wrong resolution and I have to manually adjust it. Or the resolution is correct but the image is off center (leaving a black bar on one edge of the monitor and missing rows of pixels on the opposite side).

¿Are others experiencing these issues as well? I never have trouble with the other peripherals (keyboard, mouse, network cable).

I purchased Steam's official dock cause I wanted the additional charger. ¿Can owners of docks from alternate manufacturers report how well external displays connect? Might be worth a switch to save me all the hassle.

edit: I just learned that you won't receive updates to the dock unless you follow this procedure:

  1. power everything off (shut down deck completely, don't just sleep it)
  2. remove all peripherals connected to the dock (except network cable if you use that for your connection)
  3. start the deck
  4. if there are any updates for the the dock, they should show in the options of gaming mode

🤨 why tho, valve? why not show dock updates always? how am I supposed to know about them otherwise... 😮‍💨
