In most cases I'd just want to DM somebody to ask about something on Lemmy (i.e. message a mod) so nothing that I'd be too worried about privacy with, but yeah I kinda assumed they're not super secure.

Then again I doubt Reddit etc were either

Yeah, but every dead wagnerite and every soldier that needs to fight them is one less in Ukraine so that works for me

I feel this is more of a general symptom where Hollywood has been reduced to domination by a few studios that are not willing to invest it take risks on creativity, so instead of something new and interesting we get live action remakes, Indiana Jones and the Adult Diaper, and a remake of Harry Potter.

Space? There's really not any reason a removable battery needs to take up more space than otherwise if the phone is designed well.

It doesn't need to be pop-in/out just replaceable without being glued in place and not underneath a glued chassis.

Yeah, the cheap way for it too be replaced is for me to buy a new battery, pop off the back, and change it. Even a screw-on back would be fine if people were concerned about the cover popping open etc, and they've already done devices with removable batteries that were IP67 rated (not waterproof, but also not going to get wrecked with brief exposure).

There's no reason this needs to be a difficult thing, and I don't really see any benefit to not doing so other than planned obselescence

No, that's not how it works. In order to do so, they'd have to first claim the money received as income.

That said, there are scummy things that they do. At the least, it's saying "we [bigcorp] donated $1,000,000 to charity" when in reality all that they did was collect it. In other situations, companies like Sobey's doesn't actually pass on food bank donations as cash, but rather have then as credit to buy products only from Sobey's.

Well, what we've seen this far is not making it mandatory just means that the battery will not be user-replaceable on 99% of devices, because that's the most profitable way of doing it even if it results in a lot of extra waste

I did something similar with a color screen+pi-pico for a rotating set of photos. It doesn't look great for everything though as the photos themselves need to play nicely with the 8-color palette of the service, and be reduced to a bitmap that can be read in.

Low-power consumption is cool though

I feel like OLED screens partly replace this, since they could have a small indicator on the screen without needing to power a backlight etc

I'd like to have the IR blaster and a good app on WearOS devices. Even more discreet and handy than a phone!

I liked the physical toggle for silent mode on iPhones. Flip/slide-out keyboards were also kinda cool

As far as apps though... I really loved having a good programmable remote app on devices with an IR transceiver. The best one was actually on Palm of all things, and you could add custom icons to a layout and then record inputs from your actual remotes to replay.

You're in luck for the battery thing. It's basically going to be mandatory in the EU which should hopefully help push change everywhere
