I’m not technically an expat but I’m almost never in Canada. In Menton, France at the moment

I went to high school in Norwich so I’ve spent a fair amount of time there, although not in well over a decade. There are definitely a lot of religious people there and the community definitely feels split in two in some ways. There is a very similar feel in nearby communities like Otterville and Burgessville. That being said this article makes it seem like there is a war going on but they more or less just seem like normal small towns if you were to visit. It’s not like people are being harassed in public and they’re miserable places.

That being said the closing on Sundays thing is real. I’ve heard of the pressure from the religious community to close on Sundays from people who have owned businesses on Main St.

They don’t know what the sound signals were from… it’s a big ocean

I’ve been to Asia on several occasions but not while working. The issue is me and my gf have a cat and even going to Europe is a challenge and causes him a lot of stress. This may actually be my last DN stint in Europe just because travelling with a pet overseas is too hard. If it weren’t for that we would definitely go to Asia! We were thinking about finding someone to look after him for a month while we go to Japan.

I’m a software dev with my own consulting business.

I have a couple large customers (as in $billion+ companies) and I got the contracts because I knew people at the company, or knew someone who knew someone. Remember the foundation of business is trust. Getting a referral is basically a shortcut to them trusting you. If you then go on to do good work for them you can get a very good thing going for yourself.

I just use Excel, but I also don't track my spending at a very detailed level. I have a budget for the month, and I sort of adjust my spending as I go to make sure I meet that budget.

Honestly if I worked at YouTube and they asked me to implement this I'd quit.

Two that immediately come to mind are “NAND to Tetris” and “Crafting Interpeters”. Both are free and excellent.

I guess “worst wildfire season in 23 years” doesn’t have the same ring to it?

I can only speak for myself but me and my gf basically live out of Airbnbs around the world. We typically rent a minimum of two months. There are plenty of Airbnbs I can spend two months in. I would kill myself if I had to spend two months in a hotel room.
