Oh really? That'd be welcome news. I'll have to try it again. I tested it yesterday and got an Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender from my sender email account's mailer daemon.

For email, I landed on Tuta as being the closest in feature parity and signed up for the €3/mo plan. Been pretty happy so far and was pleasantly surprised to see both the email and calendar apps were available on F-Droid. Personal bonus for me was they also run on renewable energy.

So far the only con I've found was lack of support for +aliases (e.g. [email protected]) but the 15 additional email addresses help to offset that.

Awesome, glad to see some positive news about the environment.

There's a similar project going on right now led by the Philippine Eagle Foundation to reforest native habitat. They partner with indigenous peoples to plant and maintain the trees. You can adopt a single tree for as little as ₱250 (~$4). They even give you a way to track the trees you've donated 🌴🦅

Yep, I'm starting to shift more of my online time to fediverse apps. I agree that it's refreshing to see the internet back in the hands of regular people who just want to create, share their interests, and be entertained.

Compare that to corporations who just want to extract as much value from you, keep you addicted to scrolling by tuning their algorithms to feed you polarizing news, and track and sell your personal data. The last straw was seeing these billionaires change their company cultures overnight to kowtow to the current administration.

I remember the internet in the late 90's and early 00's. The fediverse gives me a little bit of that nostalgia vibe. I hope it stays active and gives people an alternative to the walled garden dystopia companies have turned the current internet into.

yeah, I'm actively avoiding products that tout AI. It's a worse experience and my data gets used to train some model for some company's enrichment.

Apple Intelligence too. Thankfully you can still disable it

Yep, did the same. Started using Tuta for email, solid privacy and UI, app available on F-Droid, and the bonus for me was them being powered by renewables.

The language in the tweet was telling, i.e party of the "little guys" and tagging the president for visibility. You can't turn a blind eye to all the other destabilizing things this admin is doing just because they made 1 semi-competent cabinet pick (which should be the baseline expectation).

After digging around, I'm going to try Tuta for email/calendar and Mullvad for VPN. Tuta's €3 plan lets you have 15 additional addresses and 3 custom domains.

Anyone using a good proton drive alternative?

You can still cancel your subscription so that it won't auto-renew in 2 years and it let's you leave a comment when doing so if you want to voice any concerns.

America’s magic bean market is in turmoil after a Chinese company unveiled a competing bean that’s less than one tenth the price but still just as useless.

😂 First line got me. Bookmarking the Beaverton

Very disappointing. Been a paid Proton user for over 5 years and now looking to migrate. The supposed party of the "little guys" also nominated an FCC chairman who gutted net neutrality and whose court appointed judges and FCC chairs blocked the Biden admin's attempts to reinstate it, but yeah both sides are the same. Say nothing of the other egregious policies that clearly benefit the wealthy at the expense of the average citizen.

Proton is supposedly neutral, yet blatantly praises the party in power while denigrating the other. Privacy is a political issue and the party you're aligning with has a track record of eroding freedoms so even the non-apology doesn't square.
