Tried guix package manager on Arch. Have any recommendations for dealing with how slow guix pull can be?
So in a nutshell it's multiple players creating multiple bases?
Soldering is a skill you can absolutely pick up quickly. Grab a cheap kit from Amazon (or a pinecil), watch a couple YouTube videos, and practice on a spare PCB (can get actual soldering practice board for quite cheap).

That is too bad. Does your CPU/mobo have integrated graphics to bypass the discrete GPU?
My advice: start with the default and change one thing at a time. I learn more that way and it's easier to troubleshoot errors.
