So, what about the new (emulation based) system that came out? I know it's mostly for the games, but can it also be used for BASIC programming? I still have a couple of magazines which came with fun user-made programs laying around.

This. I was also worried the first time I noticed, but seeing it happened often I just went on and updated anyway. No issues so far.
