Are the Feds actually this smooth-brained? I mean, I know they have to maintain the appearance of control, so his words make sense from that perspective. But surely they have to be aware, the very backdoors they originally forced down our throats are EXACTLY WHAT'S CAUSING THIS PROBLEM NOW. These geniuses who purportedly protect American citizens, are either woefully inept, lacking basic understanding of how data security actually works, or LYING with malice. Which do you think it is?

Seems like that could breed resentment in the minds of astronauts who get stuck, like Butch and Suni. As cool as working in space would be, it's still work. Combined with the toll that microgravity takes on the body, and missing my loved ones, I'd be wanting some "extra" compensation for my time and health.

So, real nuts and bolts question here. How does this affect their pay? Are they being paid extra to be up there so long? I would want overtime.

Content filters! I've got them for Trump, Elon, "Slammed", "Dragged", "Blasted" and the question mark, because news headlines in the form of questions can almost always be answered with the word "no" and are not worth my time.

OK, I'll bite. Source?

Obviously, don't upload any photos to the demo site that you wouldn't want shared. That's pretty basic internet 101. The point is to demonstrate the amount and types of information Google infers from its users' data. So feed it a pic you don't care about, or try with the supplied images.

Best part? The description supplied here is probably a limited version of all the information that Google infers from each of your photographs. It would make sense to ask for a short 3 paragraph summary of key observations to fit within API limits. On Google's end? No reason for such limits to exist. So they infer even more from your data than this website can show. And they run this kind of compute on everything you give them.

They "claim" that they don't sell or share this data. Do you trust them?

You might say you have nothing to hide, but you also don't get to control the shifting definitions of what's acceptable. Today you're fine. Tomorrow you're labeled a political dissident because of the evidence of Wrongthink that Google happily supplied to the government without your knowledge. Especially in light of the incoming administration, this is an important discussion to have.

Here is a list of FOSS Google Photos alternatives. Immich looks particularly good to me.

People are in disbelief that they would be making this kid into a hero

Last time I checked, he was a full grown 26 year old man who made his own decisions, not a "kid."

Thomas Thowsen and James LaRochelle, welcome to the List!

Stephen Bonczyk of Lakeland Florida is a tyrant and fascist who doesn't respect our right to free speech in the US. In my opinion.

You think Microsoft doesn't give a direct uplink to America's thought police?

Wonder if Chief Piggy Sam Taylor's speech has been entirely free of no-no words his whole life, since that's the standard he's applying here?

This guy's dad is the former VP of a multibillion dollar Turkish conglomerate, as well as the secretary of a government department. Mom and Dad were able to fly to their other home in NJ to give birth so he'd get US citizenship. His uncle is the founder and owner of TYT Media and gave him his media career. He went to Rutgers. He lives in a multimillion dollar mansion in the Hollywood Hills. This is by definition not the kind of person who can be a voice of the People. Saying "I recognize my privilege" over and over, while living his lifestyle, doesn't negate his privilege and complete lack of real-life experience outside of the curated garden of the wealthy. He gets paid obscene amounts of cash to sit in his bedroom and word-vomit for 9 hours a day. Why are his unending opinions taken so seriously? He gives me strong controlled opposition vibes.

Edit: Thank you all for this discussion. I learned a lot.

If you use the privacy respecting Gboard alternative called FUTO keyboard, you've probably noticed that the built in swipe typing is HOT GARBAGE. (Typing this currently with two thumbs for this exact reason.)

Most keyboards improve their swipe algorithms by simply spying on you and logging your typing data. FUTO isn't about that, so they have built a simple webpage based typing game that you can use to improve their system in an ethical and voluntary manner! Just swipe the website's keyboard to type a provided sentence.

I love this, they can crowdsource the improvement without invading privacy!

Share with any relevant communities you're a part of. The more data, the better this gets.

I'm curious about when we might see the next AMD refresh for the Framework Laptop 13. The current top-spec option is the Ryzen 7 7840U, which was introduced in early 2023 and started shipping in Q3 2023. Given AMD's latest offerings and Framework's history of timely updates, soon we might expect to see a new mainboard featuring AMD's newer CPUs, like those from the Ryzen 8040 series or the upcoming Ryzen 9000 series.

  • Ryzen 7 7840U:
    • Architecture: Zen 4
    • Cores/Threads: 8/16
    • Base/Boost Clock: 3.3 GHz / 5.1 GHz
    • TDP: 15-28W
    • Integrated GPU: Radeon 780M

Potential New CPUs:

  • Ryzen 8040 Series: Higher base and boost clocks, improved power efficiency, and enhanced RDNA 2 or RDNA 3 integrated graphics.
  • Ryzen 9000 Series: Zen 5 architecture, up to 16 cores and 32 threads, improved AI processing capabilities, and better power efficiency.

Framework has consistently updated its laptops with the latest Intel and AMD CPUs, so it seems we might be due for a refresh soon.

What are your expectations for the next AMD mainboard refresh?

I was a long-time subscriber to Sync For Reddit, until the great third party app purge last year when I just boycotted Reddit altogether. Now, a year later, I'm looking to fill that content hole with Lemmy, and stumbled across Sync For Lemmy. I love it! The one functionality I miss from SFR was the embedded player for YouTube videos. It seems that YouTube links will open only in the YouTube app or the external web browser. Is there a plan to reimplement the built-in player?
