You're probably aware by now but it appears to have changed. I don't see an avatar for you from my instance (lemmy.world).
No, you're correct. The software was named after the small rodent (lemming). One of the co-creators of lemmy talks about the name here: https://lemmy.ml/post/70319
It's just that "lemmy" sounds like you're saying "let me" quickly and not enunciating properly.

I still play through Final Fantasy VI at least once a year.
People have mentioned Mass Effect so a big +1 to those games as well.
