Welcome! That's cool, hope you find some communities here that you find engaging. As for deleting my account and all the rest, I'll probably do the same very soon.

Oh, that sounds nice, should be a good day then. I haven't stopped by an ice cream stand yet this year, should do that before the season is out for sure. Usually I go for moose tracks if they have it.

I thought this would be a good reminder as well. While I am not a father myself, I spend time with mine usually, doing whatever he has planned for the day. We're not really much for exchanging cards and such. I think time spent together is an ample way to spend the day overall.

Are you planning anything? What do you usually do for fathers day?

That's so awesome, glad you're making progress!

The topic of conversation is general, friendly civil discussion. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. If you're unfamiliar with Matrix- the process of joining is fairly simple. Follow the prompts on the invite link below and create an account/join.

Element seems to be the main software to access Matrix chats at this point in time. It's available on desktop through your browser or in a native client if you want to download it. If you're on mobile you may need to check out the Element app. Look forward to seeing you there!

Please keep in mind that this is a brand new chat so it likely will be moderately paced for the moment but it would still be awesome if you stick around.

Why not go with/add a Discord?
For the moment our community is still growing and I have no intention of splitting what will be a modestly paced chat into two. Matrix does well to fit the federated ethos here, so I have decided to go with it for now. If you've never used Matrix, give it a try- I hadn't either before creating this chat.

Well put, regarding the capture by corporate interests and the return. I couldn't really put my finger on why I had been feeling like the fediverse is as exciting and interesting as the early internet I experienced growing up, but I think that is at least a large part of why that is.

Besides there are probably better ways to use all the time I used to waste scrolling through my Reddit feed.

Honestly it's kind of nice having a full fledged app in my pocket to burn time with. Though I'm not opposed to one for kbin (or the existing one for lemmy), it's been pretty refreshing just having my access mostly be limited to desktop. I do find myself more centered on what's happening in front of me when I'm out and about.

There are a few niche hobby and interest communities I might check in on

I hope we see even more niche communities see growth on different instances. I've noticed quite a few are popping up with subscribers, they just need participation from the community more than anything. I think they will get that as more people adopt the platform.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah, totally understandable. That's quite a run. As you've said even if they were to backpedal and reverse everything- which they won't there's definitely no guarantee it won't just happen again in the future. It seems like they're using a heavy hand this time, and now they're even threatening to oust mods for protesting.

Now that I think of it, I haven't checked Reddit either since coming here. I really do think once people set foot here or on any instance for that matter there's a good chance they won't want to go back. I also feel like, there's really nothing stopping people from striking up new communities to represent ones they (and others) may have lost, which is great. Also I have a similar approach on the ads, I run ad-guard DNS on my phone and it works with most things, but what it doesn't work with doesn't get a place on my phone.

That's a great idea actually. Nice approach on the matter and thanks for spreading the word. I may keep my account just to do the same on desktop. I really don't want anything reddit related on my phone anymore though. With them forcing the use of their own app and pretty much making their mobile site unusable I'd just have to stick to desktop with ublock origin.

There's a lot of noise with this one. Among the noisiest we've seen. Please know that our teams are on it, and like all blowups on Reddit, this one will pass as well. The most important things we can do right now are stay focused, adapt to challenges, and keep moving forward. We absolutely must ship what we said we would.

This was a few days back, but I think it's important to bring up for the moment. This is just completely convincing me that those running Reddit are entirely out of touch with their moderators and the well-being of their users. Does this make you want to leave or just rub you the wrong way? Have you already left for good or are you still open to using the platform now that more subreddits are reopening?

I've personally deleted the Reddit related apps off my phone and replaced them with the webapp for Kbin for now by adding the site to my home screen, until an app is developed and released.

Thanks for the input everyone. For now I've started a Matrix chat and put it in the sidebar for anyone interested. In the future I may consider also adding a Discord.

Hey all, we just ticked over the 500 sub mark. It's been very encouraging reading your stories of how you've found this community, the wider fediverse and reading what you have to say! I am confident we can continue to grow and keep the same friendly vibe going forward.

If you see content here that you feel is engaging or interesting, don't forget to boost it and tick the up arrow so others will have a chance to see it outside of our corner of the internet.

Recently you may have noticed that federation has been enabled once again. What this means is that users from other instances on the fediverse will again be able to chime in and subscribe here, which is fantastic. It also means if you have a Mastodon account you can @ / mention the mag to get your post directly into the Microblog!

All good stuff! Anyways, hope you all are having a good one. Just wanted to express my enthusiasm for the future of our community here, as well as my gratitude for those of you contributing. Thanks for sharing a bit of yourselves here, looking forward to what the future holds.

Hours are definitely passing quickly for me while browsing kbin, mastodon, and participating in related chats and such. It's definitely one of the first things I think about when I wake up, which is a testament to how intoxicating it is. That said, I don't let anything get in the way of my sleep these days. Overall, I'm glad to have discovered the fediverse. It feels engaging in a way that the early web did for me as I was growing up.

@mishamouse Good luck with the move! I've been struggling to get motivated as well as I just dropped coffee in favor of tea and the reduction in caffeine has left me with bouts of tiredness over the last two days. Overall still doing good though, can't complain too much. This community received a lot of activity on day 1 of Reddit going dark so that was cool to see.

Thanks for the add, look forward to checking out your updates for sure! Sorry to hear that they social graph was gone, it seems like it's a good thing they were able to recover anything for you though. Sounds like a good administrator for sure.

I once took a trip to eastern Europe (multiple locations) which took me about half way across the world from where I'm at. I think I'd have been closer to home if I went any further east or west at that point.

So I was mulling over the idea of adding a Discord or Matrix chat in the bio. Would anyone want to participate in a chat for this magazine? If so, which platform would you prefer to use? I have noticed that other magazines have Discord links in their bios, which seems alright.

In general it would be for casual, friendly conversation about daily life and whatever interests you. Do you think this is a bad or good idea?

Let me know what you think, it would be greatly appreciated!

I originally had signed up for a few social media platforms in their early days but over time I felt that I wasn't seeing what I thought I wanted to see. As companies started tailoring their algorithms things started to get less relevant to my interests. As a result I left behind those platforms for a couple of years before discovering Mastodon instances.

It was basically everything I thought social media should be, I would again get updates from people I followed and in a chronological order without a mess of advertisements. There was no push to show me content I hadn't even asked to see, so that was really refreshing. I only recently realized that federated content platforms and their protocols were so versatile, given what we're on now feels very different from Mastodon. I can't help it but I am more than a bit excited about the potential!

What's your story? Do you use anything that could be considered social media or have you in the past?

Hello and welcome! The main goal of m/chat is to create a general social space for people to freely and safely communicate about their lives, interests and everything else freely. Casual conversation is encouraged.

Feel free to introduce yourself here and share as much, or as little as you would like. If you don't have an account, get signed up!

I was initially introduced to Mastodon a few years ago by a close friend and picked up on it quickly given the benefits of not having to deal with advertising, or being shown what a mega-corporation thought I should have to see through algorithms. I have since found a great instance over on cupoftea.social that promotes quality discussion with friendly participants.

This planted my initial seed about federated social media. I knew from some experience that it could be applied in many different ways. I started looking at Reddit alternatives recently as things started heating up over the recent API changes and came across both kbin and lemmy.

Anyways that's enough about my journey, I'm more curious about yours. What brought you here and do you plan on staying for a while?

Hello all! I've decided to start this community in order to create a space on kbin where people can chat about things they might not feel fit anywhere else. Discussion here can include topics that do fit elsewhere, however. The main goal of chat is to create a general social space for people to freely and safely communicate about their lives, interests and everything else naturally.

I want to do my best to promote an open community that is welcoming and generates quality conversations. I don't like to have to spell it out but bigotry is not welcome here. Please don't be a jerk and remember the human. If that all sounds good to you, welcome to what I hope to be a nice community here on kbin and have fun!
