Oh god I got so tired of the jokes. In the beginning I liked to see them peppered in here and there, and I love a good pun, but it just became so overdone and forced. Every thread was just lines and lines and lines of jokes (many of them weren't even good) with no actual conversation. It got boring.

I think you're right that trying to figure out how it all works will be a barrier for some and they won't bother. That could be a good thing or a bad thing, we'll just have to wait and see what kind of user base this grows into!
In a way I'm a little sad but I'm also hopeful. I started on Reddit 13 years ago and it was a very different place than it is now. I liked it better then, and I think I'm sad and will miss it for what it was, not what it is. I'm hopeful for a fresh start here on Lemmy where it feels like I'm getting back to the actual conversation with other users, which is what I miss about the current Reddit. There's very little conversation there anymore, so much of it is just pictures and jokes and bots.
I usually have two books going, one is a travel book (on my Kindle) and one is a home book. For whatever reason, I never pick up my Kindle to read at home.
I've also read The shining multiple times. Stephen King is one of the few authors where I enjoy rereading his stuff again and again. I've read a lot of really great books that I'm not going to pick up again and I wonder what it is that makes me want to reread the same book sometimes and not other times even if I really loved the book.
I'm currently reading Moby Dick for the first time and I'm loving it. I didn't expect it to be so funny! This is the first book I've read by Herman Melville and his writing style is just beautiful.
I'm excited for you to start Stephen King's The Stand, it's one of my favorite of his!
What is the "specific user profile" on Lemmy, in your opinion? I'm brand new here so just trying to learn what I'm in for!
I'm going to miss all the ones that I subscribed to! Hopefully things pick up here and those communities will rebuild themselves here to some extent.
I really miss the city subs too, I subscribed to a whole bunch focused on my city and I also liked to go browse the ones for cities I was going to be traveling to. Hopefully they will somehow pop up here too.
Thank you for that simple explanation! I chose lemmy.world purely at random so I hope I ended up liking it here; seems pretty cool so far :)
This is my first visit so I'm still trying to figure things out. I'm on the mobile website right now because I haven't been able to figure out how to log in on the Jerboa app. Can anyone tell me what "instance" means on Jerboa when you're logging in? I tried a couple different ones from the dropdown menu but they all said " incorrect login."
The one thing that I don't like is that you can't change your home instance. I signed up for Lemmy without knowing anything about it, and I mean I knew absolutely ZERO about how it works. Therefore, I just clicked on a random instance because I didn't even know what an instance was, and I signed up. So what if I joined the wrong one for me? What if it turns out to be shit? I Guess I could just sign up for a different one with a different login, but wish there was an option to jump to a new one with your same login if you wanted to.
