This is my first visit so I'm still trying to figure things out. I'm on the mobile website right now because I haven't been able to figure out how to log in on the Jerboa app. Can anyone tell me what "instance" means on Jerboa when you're logging in? I tried a couple different ones from the dropdown menu but they all said " incorrect login."

Instance is basically a server. All of the servers talk to each other, so you can post and comment on any one of them. But your physical account resides on only one server. Currently, you can't migrate your account from one server to another, but it's planned as a feature in future releases of Lemmy.

Your instance (server) is lemmy.world, so you need to type that in the instance field. Thus, your username on Lemmy (and in the fediverse) is [email protected].

Thank you for that simple explanation! I chose lemmy.world purely at random so I hope I ended up liking it here; seems pretty cool so far :)

You don't have to interact with any of the communities here. You just subscribe to communities that you like, they don't have to be on the same instance ๐Ÿ˜‰.

Thanks for this explanation. Where are "subreddits" and how do I find them? Are they on different instances?

[โ€“] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

"subreddits" are communities. You can find them with the search field from your instance, or using the community browser.

Similarly to how on reddit subreddits are noted with a r/, here communities are noted as c/. So, let's say you wanna join c/angryupvote. You search for angry upvote in the communities you are currently subscribed to (bottom row buttons, second button from the left) and it may return a few different communities on several different instances (servers). You pick the ones thay you wanna join and that's that. The only difference is how these communities are linked. On reddit, it was pretty simple: r/subredditname. Here, since the newtwork is federated, you also have to note the server on which the community (subreddit) resides: somelemmyserver.com/c/communityname.
