I agree. I actually think the only things that could legitimately wipe out humanity are cosmic things we have no control over and it’d have to be so significant that there’s little chance of it actually happening. (Until the sun’s red giant phase, anyway.)

I chose it for development reasons. I kind of fell into a decent career but one I didn’t enjoy and was tied to a specific geographic region. So, I was learning to code and my coworkers who wrote code were using Linux and all our servers were CentOS (or maybe WhiteHat or whatever it was called then). So, I installed Fedora Core 4 — I’m old — and liked it better than Windows. I loved being able to customize everything.
Eventually, I learned the philosophical reasons for open source after I got into it but they matched my personal beliefs so that was no issue.
I used to distro hop frequently and I’ve probably tried all the major distros at least once but after awhile, I began to just stick to Fedora or Ubuntu LTS for servers (and I guess Arch on Steam Deck, Raspbian on the Raspberry Pi, etc.). I like Vanilla Gnome nowadays and when I want to see a new distro, I just check it out in a VM.
I think Chrunchbang (R.I.P.) was my favorite distro when I was all-in on distro hopping and customizing everything. But at some point for a developer, your OS becomes more of a tool for opening an IDE and/or terminal and you value stability over customization or having the very latest software. In the Flatpak era, that’s even more true since you can run the newest versions regardless of the system.

I think PlayStation’s OS is a FreeBSD derivative, Switch is proprietary but uses parts of FreeBSD and Android, and Steam Deck runs straight Linux so maybe it’s more “The decade of the *nix console” rather than “the year of the Linux desktop”?

Gaming is pretty close now thanks to the Steam Deck and Valve’s work on Proton. It depends on what games you play since some anticheat requires Windows or console but I mostly play single player games and have a console if I want to play something competitive.
If you have a specific, competitive game you play, you might want to stick with Windows (or console) if support isn’t there. AMD GPUs are also better for Linux (because they open source their drivers) but Nvidia is getting better since a lot of machine learning customers use Linux. They have a huge financial incentive now that it’s data center customers complaining instead of random Linux users.
I don’t think the consumer side is where they expect long-term demand to come. The Department of Defense and some businesses want AR (and VR for training) and Apple now has a fuckton (1.016 metric fucktons) of patents.
Remember when Microsoft did that whole HaloLens trial with DoD and it made soldiers nauseous and generally just wasn’t good enough? Well, someone is eventually going to get that contract. Apple itself doesn’t go for military or intelligence agency contracts but I’m sure they’d be willing to license their patents to someone who will.
My dad had an irrational hatred of McDonald’s so even when we got fast food, we went to Popeyes or Taco Bell or wherever. In college, I lived off Burger King’s dollar menu. But if you don’t have a positive childhood memory of the McDonald’s taste, it just tastes like chemicals. And if you don’t already know what they sell, it sucks going there. I went with a friend once and I was like, “Do they have a list of items they sell or is it all just combos I have to deconstruct?” People were annoyed because I was taking too long to order and I was like, “Motherfucker, I’m reading the menu. I don’t know what they call shit here.”
I’m not above eating fast food. I get a hankering for other places occasionally, especially for breakfast. But to this day, every McDonald’s item tastes really funky to me.
