I grew up being taught that Halloween was a pagan/demonic holiday and "real" Christians don't celebrate it.

As an adult I definitely changed my tune. How is someone dressing up as a scarecrow worshiping Satan? Sometime I want to go trick-or-treating with someone. Just to experience something I didn't experience as a kid.

As a man (straight) I consider it my duty to pay for a date, but if the woman wants to pay or go Dutch I'm not going to raise a fuss.

I'll usually tell her straight up I do this as well. I figure if someone isn't comfortable with me communicating something as simple as who's going to pay for a date, how comfortable are they going to be with me communicating about other things as well?

For me, I've just accepted I may not be everyone's cup of tea. And that's fine. That doesn't make me any less valuable.

For me the risks are a lot higher since I've been looking nonstop for work (in software) for the past 2-3 years. I realize I do have a strong personality: I love to get engaged in a project and really own it. Whenever I feel a potential employer/client trying to play it "cool," I'll often try to engage with them more and try to provide more value for them.

I do try to temper this. But at the end of the day I realize that while most people may not want someone engaged with their team, there are some companies that are desperate for people like me. And I just need to find out who they are...it just might take a while.

Oh, no, it's definitely not a thing you age out of!

I've found the ADHD rewired podcast is a pretty good podcast. The hose (whose name I forget) has ADHD himself and often has tips for adults with ADHD. Anytime I listen I think I smile and don't feel so alone.

I was also a part of a group called CHADD some time ago (Children & Adults with ADHD). You might be able to look for a chapter in your area. I also came across a remote (non-CHADD) ADHD support group on meetup...that might be a good place to look for a group.

Thanks all for the input!

Haha, thanks. I wasn't interested in relaxing...more grounding.

Like I wouldn't consider hot peppers relaxing (maybe once the endorphins kick in), but it does help me stay in the moment. Stuff like that.

Looks like the consensus is...yes, give it another go (though a few warned that, yeah, it may not be all people promise).

Alright, once I can afford it and things stabilize I think I will. Thanks for the input!

Thank you for your honesty. 😆 I kinda had that reaction recently when I saw free Andromeda episodes on YouTube. Checked one out to see if it's as good as I remembered and...hardly. 🤣

Oh, no, it's not that. I mean, the special effects definitely didn't age well, but I focus on the story, the suspense. I'm someone who can easily get wrapped up into what the characters are thinking/feeling/etc. With the right director, writer, and crew at the helm, you can have a sci fi show with two people in a room having an intense political discussion and have it be good.

Oh, yeah, for sure. And no, worries, I'm not discounting world building. I realize that most shows these days have a world building phase where not a lot happens. But in the end the world building should lead to something exciting. I tried to turn my mom onto the Expanse (one of my all-time favorite shows) but she said she gave it a go but couldn't get interested. 😅

In the novel I'm writing this occurs. Someone from 2004 is transported to a planet in the year 240,000. She learns the language, but she can't quite get the dialect down because humans have evolved different facial/vocal muscles by this point.

Obviously it's in writing so I can get away with not having to explicitly define the accent. 😅
