Hi everyone,

We’re back with the most popular blogs from last month:

💜 We have joined forces with r/StandardNotes! In the coming months, we hope to find ways to make Standard Notes more easily accessible to the Proton community.

🎭 In case you missed it, Proton now alerts you if an online service you’re registered for with a Proton Mail address has had a data breach or has been hacked. In the meantime, in early May, we have also implemented a similar service for your Proton Pass aliases and passwords.

🔑 Speaking of passwords, passkeys have remained a big topic: we’ve discussed the Big Tech’s implementation of them, as well as whether they’ll completely replace passwords in the future.

As usual, you were interested in practical matters too, like: 📱 how to create an email account without the phone number verification, 💧 what to do if your data leaks, and 🧩 how to protect yourself from social engineering.

We’ve also analyzed several services’ privacy practices closely. You have been most interested in how Whatsapp treats your photos, and the security of Google Chrome’s password manager and iCloud Keychain.

We’ll keep rounding up top blog articles each month for you to make sure you’re all caught up on the latest news and tips. You can follow our blog here (we have an RSS feed, too), and we welcome all your suggestions about what we should write about next! Let us know in the comments below.

Hi everyone,

We’re happy to announce that the 2nd highest-voted feature request is rolling out this week — Proton Pass Monitor.

Proton Pass Monitor keeps your data safe with dark web monitoring, checking for weak and reused passwords, scanning for accounts with inactive 2FA, and providing easy access to Proton Sentinel.

You can also check out the following support articles:

https://proton.me/support/what-is-pass-monitor https://proton.me/support/how-to-use-pass-monitor

Let us know what you think! As always, we appreciate your support and feedback.

— Proton Team

P.S. We also want to give a huge shoutout to u/Alfondorion who (along with many others) suggested the name.

It may take a little time for Proton Pass Monitor to become available on all platforms, thanks for your patience!

simplelogin aliases

Big bummer indeed!

[-] Nelizea 1 points 3 weeks ago

If it keeps happening, I'd suggest raising a support case.

[-] Nelizea 7 points 3 weeks ago

No there's no public available API and AFAIK there are no plans for that.

Hey everyone!

As of today, Dark Web Monitoring is available to all paying users of Proton Mail. Proton alerts you if an online service you’re registered for has had a data breach or has been hacked: https://proton.me/blog/dark-web-monitoring

Proton Dark web monitoring (imgur video link, as the file was too big to upload to lemmy)

To get started, open the Security Center in the Proton Mail web app, or go to Settings>Security and privacy: https://proton.me/support/dark-web-monitoring

We look forward to your feedback!

Come on, we both know this isn't exactly what OP asked about, let's stop nitpicking here. What OP meant is a "make available offline" function, which exists.

[-] Nelizea 10 points 1 month ago

Thunderbird mail syncing (without paid plan?)

No, the bridge is available for paid plans.

Thunderbird calendar syncing

Nope

Calendar sharing

With a link to anyone: https://proton.me/support/share-calendar-with-proton-users

With Proton users:

https://proton.me/support/share-calendar-with-proton-users

Easy move from google drive to proton drive

Not yet there, something like that is planned.

Sync android photos like google photos

Not sync but backup:

https://proton.me/blog/proton-drive-photo-backup-android

Offline file saving for specific files in proton drive on android

Offline availability in the Proton Drive app exists.

Sync with folder or mount on linux (smb or similar)

Out of the box not. rclone has some support.

[-] Nelizea 2 points 1 month ago

Proton Drive has an offline function.

Standardnotes will keep running as independent service and Proton is also looking into ways how to make Standardnotes more accessible to the Proton community.

I do not have more information for now. Personally I do think it will be like SimpleLogin somewhen, yes.

[-] Nelizea 4 points 1 month ago

Standardnotes will keep operating, as does SimpleLogin.

[-] Nelizea 4 points 1 month ago

But overall - can proton users now use standard notes paid plan for free? Or what does it mean?

Right now not. What will be afterwards I do not know. Personally I hope and think yes :D

Hi everyone, This is Andy, Proton founder/CEO here. I just wanted to share the news that Standard Notes and Proton are joining forces.

This was an idea that people from both the Proton and Standard Notes communities have brought up repeatedly over the years, and after discussing it with Mo, the founder of Standard Notes, we both felt it was a good idea.

Both Proton and Standard Notes have unique shared values. We are both community-driven, not VC-financed, and committed to open-source. By joining forces, we hope to deliver more valuable services to both the Proton and Standard Notes user communities. A bit more about this on the Proton blog here.

As always, thanks for your support as we continue to fight for a more private internet, now with even more people on the team!

. But this doesn’t really matter because autofill is almost completely non-functional anyway. Maybe 5% of the time it works. so you end up having to go back and forth copying and pasting username/email/TOTP

This is certainly incorrect and I wouldn't be too much worried about that. There has been huge improvements since the realease. If there are certain sites that aren't working, they can be reported to the team and it will be fixed. Same as with other password managers.

Hi, everyone, If you haven’t visited the Proton VPN blog recently, here’s an overview of the posts published in March:

▶️ Best YouTube alternatives There’s no doubt that YouTube has forever changed the online entertainment landscape. But your YouTube habits are profiled and combined with your search history, Gmail metadata, photo metadata, how you use your Android phone, and much more to profile you and target you with ever more personalized ads. So, we did some research into what other services you could use as a replacement for it.

🎦 Open source Zoom alternatives that respect your privacy Zoom became a household name during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the confidence in the platform wavered in the face of privacy and security concerns, so we provided a list of privacy-first alternatives.

⚙️What is private DNS and should you use it with a VPN? We look at what private DNS is, how it can help protect your privacy, and how to enable it on your device, but also why you shouldn’t use it with VPN.

Additionally, many of you have been interested in our initiative to provide free VPN to users in countries with upcoming elections, particularly in countries with a history of online censorship. Make sure to also check our predictions for this year regarding this subject. You can follow our blog here: https://protonvpn.com/blog/

From the team:

Hi everyone,

We've been a bit quiet with announcements since the start of the year, with most of our efforts focused on scaling up our server infrastructure to stay ahead of the demands of our rapidly growing supporter base.

This has included adding 14 new countries to support voters in countries with a history of censorship or political interference in the weeks leading up to their election, as well as working to reduce blocking in censored countries, decreasing CAPTCHAs, and increasing download speeds, most notably in France and Germany where we have recently upgraded the last of our 1Gbps servers to 10Gbps. On top of that, we've also added over 700 new servers across multiple countries since the year started, including over 100 in the USA, and more than 50 in the UK, Germany, and Switzerland, each: https://protonvpn.com/vpn-servers/](https://protonvpn.com/vpn-servers

Overall quality, reliability, and performance across all platforms will continue to be a key focus area for us in the coming months.

As some of you have already seen from the Android beta release, we have also been working on an improved user interface to make Proton VPN better for you. Expect to see that out for Android and Windows in the coming weeks, with our other platforms to follow. And if you have feedback for us, please share it in the comments!

But we have also been working away on some of the new features that you have all been asking for. Here is an update from the development team on some of them:

  • Apple TV support: Work has started, and we're aiming for a summer 2024 release.

  • Stealth protocol on the Windows app: We've made a lot of progress on this and should have this out in the summer of 2024 as well.

  • Split Tunneling for the Android TV app: We're aiming for late spring/early summer 2024, to be followed by a split tunneling solution for our macOS app.

  • More for Linux! We just released the Advanced Kill Switch for Linux ( https://protonvpn.com/support/permanent-kill-switch/ ), but there is more to come. Keep an eye out over the next few weeks for a beta of our next feature - Wireguard support.

  • IPv6: Thanks to everyone who helped us with multiple rounds of testing. We're looking to have this out in a summer/autumn 2024 timeframe after the four previously mentioned items are out the door.

As always, thank you for your support and feedback. We wouldn't be able to do it without you.

Stay safe,

Proton Team

Hi, everyone!

We’ve got another exciting month behind us. We’ve already shared some of the most popular updates with you here on Reddit:

🍏The analysis of Apple’s approach to DMA compliance,

⏩ Our guide on how to migrate from soon-to-be-defunct Skiff Mail,

📣 Major r/ProtonPass announcements: the new Pass Business plans and the Windows app, and

🏰 What makes Proton more resilient than other providers in the online privacy space.

However, that’s not the entire story, and we’ve had a few others that have sparked a lot of interest:

Skiff alternatives - Skiff didn’t only provide email but also a calendar, cloud storage, email aliases, and collaborative docs. This article contains some possible replacements.

🔑 How to export passwords from Google Chrome - Unfortunately, the most commonly used password manager in the world is the one built into the Google Chrome browser. This article explains why this is not a good idea and what to do about it.

🌩️ Dropbox’s privacy practices - We took a dive into the Dropbox privacy policy — it’s not good.

💲 What’s your data really worth? - There’s a saying that data is the new oil because of how valuable it is to the digital economy. But what’s the value of your data, personally? Depending on where you live, information about you could be worth at least several hundred dollars a year to Facebook and Google alone.
