Yeah, I wouldn't recommend a bar either. Try taking a class, joining some sort of athletic thing (jogging, cycling, yoga) volunteering somewhere. Go to a place where you're doing an activity with a group, and the focus isn't dating. Takes the pressure off and allows for getting to know people naturally.

You're being rude for no reason

I think it's a strange position to take that giving birth is like handling radioactive material.

I think he did pretty good, so I'm not sweating the poetry

What do you think about "altruistic surrogacy", mentioned in the article? Presumably if someone is volunteering that avoids the exploitation angle?

Approaching from another angle, do you think sex work should be legal? It's another area where exploitation and abuse are a concern. But if we expect someone can earn money using their body in one area (sex work, or even just physical labor) then why should it be illegal to earn money by carrying a baby to term? Exploitation should be made illegal, not the act itself.

Lastly, my understanding is that surrogacy is more often used when a woman is unable to carry the baby, than when a man is unable to impregnate.

I hear you that rich people are selfish and causing any number of problems. That said, I think your approach misses the suffering of many normal people who want to raise a child and would be unable to otherwise.

Even if this was an activity that someone thinks should be restricted, should it be punishable with jail time? I don't think so. The law in Italy seems clearly designed to target LGBT people.

That's not a very good poem

I'm very pleased. I have a 2023 Bolt.

For us there was no way we'd get one without a home charger. It's great because every day you wake up and it's like a full tank of gas.

My wife still has a gas car and we bought the electric planning that we'd still use the gas one for road trips. The Bolt in particular doesn't have super fast charging (probably like 45 minutes to get to 80% using a fast charger) so if we didn't have the second car that might be my one concern.

My wife wasn't sold when we got it, but the electric was for me so we went ahead. Now she likes it. I'm banking on better EV options being available when we get our next car but I think it will be electric too.

I think the cartoon is on point but the added title for this post is not.

Yes, the Democrats suck in any number of ways, including supporting genocide in Israel. But anyone who's on lemmy is probably aware of that, and any argument they make about the Democrats is different ("we have to strategically vote to prevent an even worse party gaining control", or something more insane about how the existence of Hamas justifies apartheid and genocide, etc)

The press release linked in this article I think gives a little more helpful detail about what specifically the CFPB has warned the industry about. (Also, what a good agency we have in the CFPB)

It's funny how the onlookers in Everett True are always so happy that he's beating a stranger. Like you know it's ok because everyone approves. Reminds me of the Stan Kelly cartoons from the Onion.

Do you know about how Android is open source, but Google has moved a bunch of important functionality to Google Services which makes Android less desirable without them?

From my understanding it's not nearly as bad as that with WordPress, but similar in that some functionality relies on non-open source stuff that this guy Matt and his company automatic control.

He's mad that competitor company WP Engine doesn't contribute back to the project, so he's making a lot of noise and making moves to limit their access.

Is tagging a native feature of lemmy? I'm using the sync app and it appears to be a paid feature

Was thinking about how sometimes a therapist can give bad advice, and if you're not thinking about the situation clearly, how would you know? Clearly the solution is to see a bunch of them concurrently, like a therapist RAID setup

Was thinking about moderators, and how users always have plenty of opinions about what moderators are doing wrong, but seems like you see less commentary from the moderators themselves about what it takes to do a good job.

Which is probably true across any situation where there's a smaller number of leaders and a larger number of people in other roles.

Having experienced it, what does it take to lead a project, be a supervisor/boss, board member, pastor, dungeon master, legislator, etc?

Moved here a couple years ago, initially met the neighbors and know their names, but haven't had more than a handful of couple sentence interactions since then.

On the one hand, I do want a little distance: I'm not trying to hang out all the time or necessarily make new best friends. But still seems like the neighborly thing to know each other a little bit more, to have someone to call in case of emergency, or hey your dog got out, hey the global order has collapsed let's band together to keep out the raiders, etc.

So interested to know, if you do interact with your neighbors, how did you get started? What is the extent of your interaction?

I listen to Spotify on my work computer. In the last few weeks the fan always spins up when I try to play it, and I'm constantly having to reload the window for it to play anything. Playback will stop in the middle of a song sometimes.

open.spotify.com in Firefox on Windows 10. I disabled ublock. Same issue on work network and home.

Not sure how many cyclists are around. Anyways, what functional but weirdo looking gear do you use once it starts getting colder?

To expand on this - I'm interested in thinking about times that a cause we support won, not only because maybe it feels good to see positive stories instead of all negative, but also because specific examples might help illustrate why it won, and reveal strategies we can use in the future.
