I think these guys took advantage of a meteor for attention/fame.
As creative as humans are, we still build off prior people's skills and knowledge. I can see AI becoming the primary source of entertainment media in the future, uncomfortably enough.
I personally get the sense that he genuinely believes what he's saying, but has been intentionally misinformed by other intelligence staff.
