As far as I can tell, the discount applies to any of Shimano reels and rods. I've been poring over the Shimano site and the marketing copy doesn't convey anything meaningful other than saltwater or freshwater.

Yep, I'm an inveterate purger. I have tried to control the purging with a policy of hanging onto things such as power tools for one year past its last use. And almost invariably, about two weeks after I finally got rid of the thing, I need it again.
In my case, I have a very small living space, so hanging onto things just means they're in my way. But I was like this even when I had a large house.

Exactly this. My ex-wife was 5’2”, 94 pounds with clothes on. She got us banned from our favorite Chinese buffet restaurant. Her diet was "anything not nailed down." Lots of good reasons why she's an ex, but I do miss how she could pack away food.
When you scratch at the surface a little, the course of Capitalism always bends towards rent-seeking behaviors. It's enraging how not only are we trapped in this running-to-stand-still circus, but that every single aspect of our lives is getting monetized such that it's nearly impossible to just not play the game.
Municipal water systems are similar to electricity in that the supply must dynamically meet the demand within a small range of tolerance. Distributed monitoring of demand allows for better control of supply pressure, reducing strain on the system when demand drops and delivering enough water when everyone is taking their morning shower.
