Out of 56,000 who commute to work, 50,000 did so by car, with the overwhelming majority being single occupancy trips.

Over 60% of those 56,000 commute less than 29 minutes (including those who walk, take public transportation, or bike). With around 15,000 out of 56,000 saying that their commute is less than 15 minutes.

It's infuriating to know that driving has become the default for such short trips, and we still spend millions of dollars to make it easier to settle into this lazy pattern of transportation.

Posted speed limits in nearly 200 Mississauga school zones will soon increase to 40 km/h

With the new amendments on local roads, City of Mississauga officials said the speed limit will remain 30 km/h from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Friday, and outside that period will be increased to 40 km/h. The move was prompted by complaints from drivers that the 30 km/h limit was too low during times when there were no students and other people around.

Anyway, more evidence to support the fact that cars are far too efficient as weapons to be granted as much free rein as they are today. Bollards save lives, implement them liberally throughout any areas with pedestrians.

I'm not a Tesla fan by any measure, but I edited the headline for this post. The original headline made it seem like a specific feature of the Cybertruck trapped the victims, but then the article explains it was really that the battery was burning so fiercely that the police just couldn't free them. The deadly feature of the accident was the lithium battery, which is common to many makes and manufacturers of EVs.

My city (La Mure in Isère, 5,000 inhabitants) is trying to create a town square (right now, it's just parking lots). The city hall attempted a temporary urbanism approach, but there was a strong backlash from shop owners. In the end, six months later, no one's complaining anymore, and we're still waiting for the predicted death of businesses... but well.

Personally, I think it's good to let people vote, but the more I think about it, the less sure I am that it's the right approach. It's like if a dealer asked his clients for their opinion on getting less drugs. I wonder if, in the end, this won't just turn into a "parking-light" version because people struggle to see beyond parking. But at the same time, this is democracy.

I don’t have an answer, but it makes me think about the limits of democratic action when trying to change something under strong pressure from an established system. In the end, wouldn’t it be better to take direct political action, have the courage to deal with the initial backlash, and then, once it’s done, everyone’s happy? (That’s what was done when the main street was redeveloped.)

It’s a bit depressing because... what’s the alternative?

If possible to cover on a water-repelling material, then what is the point of cars? Why need to still produce pollution even after death?

A big majority of things that are done by car could be done by bike as well, if it is a cargo bike, well, even more!

A bit of a rant, but my municipality is building a "community square" in their downtown, but I noticed that there are no safe ways to get there by bike (or e-scooter, since we partake in a shared e-mobility program).

I emailed my city to voice my concern, and they said to contact the Region, who manages the main North/South road that brings you to the footsteps of this planned square.

They said that since there were no plans in the Regional cycling plan to add infrastructure to that particular road, we should just ride with mixed traffic.

For context.... this road is one-way, and four lanes. Two (one on each side) is taken up by street parking, despite us having quite a few parking lots and a large parking garage close by.

Example (and yes, the black car on the far right is illegally parking... there's another car behind them illegally parking, too............. ):

I asked if they could at least remove one parking lane to make a bi-direction bike lane that would connect two (East/west) bike lanes, and they said not a chance.

To expand, removing one parking lane would only "take away" 12 spots. 12 spots for sitting vehicles that take up two blocks, is more important than providing a safe passage for vulnerable residents to get to a public, outdoor community space??

This is pretty unbelievable, since our local businesses are all hurting downtown, and it only seems alive when we block off vehicle traffic during special events.

Seems insane how we bend over backwards for cars.

Local big box HW store (but one of their smallest stores) has closed their front doors on main street Monday to Friday. You know the doors near all the nice footpath seating.

Launched on Jan. 5, the city’s system uses license plate readers to impose a $9 toll on most passenger cars entering Manhattan neighborhoods south of Central Park. In its early days, transit officials say the toll has brought modest but measurable traffic reductions.
