One problem (there are many) with not caring about the rights of criminals is that "criminal" is not an immovable line. Governments can, have, and do throw away the rights of criminals using these kinds of arguments, and then re-categorize groups of people they don't like as criminals.

I think it's because some Microsoft computer had a dedicated button so you could do things like Office+W or Office+P (or apparently Office+L), but they had to make it use an actual keyboard input so they used a string of modifiers that wouldn't be used by accident.

It wouldn't be idea, but I think a wall that only block illumination (but not vision, movement, or sound) would do the trick if you placed it exactly in between..
