A fabulous album to hear at 4 am, bleary eyed, just getting to work at the bakery as the overnight shift is wrapping up, way too energetic for my half asleep brain to handle. Hearing that distinctive voice grow louder in the still morning darkness of a small college town. The last lingering weekend revelers reluctantly finding their way home at the end of their night as my day just begins…

20 years later, I’ve managed to keep it in rotation through dying hard drives and iPods-having lost the copy of a copy that I had ripped it from to begin with.

Who can afford blinker fluid in this economy?!

They put in protected bike lanes on big street near me. Bike lane-parking-traffic. So many ‘bike allies ‘ saying “it makes me more nervous to drive, I have to look for the cyclists now”.

In a large part of the US at least, it’s never going to be default behavior.

SI have no specific suggestions of products, but I found a wee little baby needs very little. Focus on things that will help you help the baby and make things easier for you… untill they start moving about… then I’d look for stuff at local used shops/ websites. At that age kids outgrow things fast and people get rid of practically new stuff, and less disappointing if the kid doesn’t really care about it.

Someone mentioned window shades- I’d consider dark and ceramic tints on the windows if you’re keeping the car long term (assuming you have a car). It does help keep everyone cool and sun out of little eyes.

One company who is currently practicing power shutoffs, which was the question.

Also, they made this choice after several big fires started from their infrastructure- while they were on some sort of corporate probation for exploding a neighborhood because of… faulty and under maintaining infrastructure. Not exactly a one off.

PG&E, the power and gas company for much of California does this. As a for profit company, they outsourced maintenance of their infrastructure to save money. The infrastructure was old, not well maintained or managed and it sparked several large fires over the years. They’ve paid lots of money in restitutions because of this. Now they shut off the power so they can’t be blamed for starting giant fires again…
