Profiles

The normal keyboard should have a flat PCB and the variation in height entirely based on the cap profile. Some profiles will have interchangeable keys, e.g. XDA you can swap the keys to any row except the first row while OEM you can't really swap keys between rows or they'll stick out.

As far as I know, you can use any profile on any board (provided the keycaps are compatible with the switch stems).

I bought a cheap set of transparent keys and I'll see how that goes. Seems to be difficult to find cheap XDA profile keycaps or I'm not good at searching.

First time using 40% so didn't want to put too much money into it anyway, just in case I hated it.

Mostly. The key map is this one https://github.com/qmk/qmk_firmware/tree/master/keyboards/contra/keymaps/basic

The letters are all correct, along with the arrow keys and the fn1 and fn2 keys. Not a big deal for me though, just the aesthetics are affected.
